How the James Dyson Award works, the award for budding inventors

In March The eighteenth edition of the James Dyson Awards has opened, the design competition for students of Industrial Engineering and Design and more generally for budding inventors. The central theme of the contest is the search for innovative solutions to major global problems. In past years, winning inventions ranged from improved medical diagnostics to new methods for recycling plastics.

The James Dyson Award is promoted by the foundation named after the founder of the British company, which still chooses the winners in person after a national pre-selection. The contest is up for grabs this year prizes up to € 35,700 for global winners and 5900 for the local ones of each country participating in the initiative, more than double the figures of last year.

As every year, the winning projects of 2022 will be announced in September, and aspiring inventors have until next July 6 to submit the application through the foundation’s website. Participants must be enrolled for at least one semester (or having been in the last 4 years) in a degree program or post graduate in Engineering and / or Design: “For me the importance of the James Dyson Award lies in solving a problem in an intelligent way, while for young inventors it means questioning and challenging the status quo – explained Dyson himself – The prize gives them trust and a platform to develop their solutions: 70% of our international winners bring their inventions to the market ”.

Incubators and children’s health

Among those inventions that successfully arrived on the market after the award’s victory and the consequent media exposure are the innovative neonatal incubators of mOm incubators, winners of the 2014 edition: after a development phase, they are used in some facilities of the British National Health Service. Rabbit Ray, the project he won in 2011is instead a communication tool for hospital staff that facilitates the relationship between pediatricians and patients: it is used in 44 hospitals in 23 countries around the world and the inventor, Esther Wang, still successfully manages JoyTingle, the company that distributes Rabbit Ray and other health education solutions for children.

The Italian winners

In 2021 the Italian award went to RoadFixan innovative solution for the rapid repair of road potholes: “The James Dyson Award was the right opportunity to get involved and measure our skills to solve a very important problem in our country – the inventors told us, Luca Grosso, SIlvana Migliozzi and Alessio Puleo – In recent months we have been interviewed and published in many national and international magazines. Furthermore, we had the opportunity to present the idea to various investors and at the moment we are evaluating the right partner to best develop the project “.

The winner of 2020, Matteo Brasilion the other hand, had tried his hand at an innovative solution to the problem of microplastics dispersed at sea with the Cloud of Sea project. The invention is a float that can be attached to all boats using a rope: thanks to an internal helical filter, Cloud of Sea captures and retains the microplastics present in the water. “Through the competition I met people who strongly believe in young people’s ideas,” said Brasili. Despite the project’s path originating from Italy, today the inventor looks abroad to continue its development: “Immediately after winning the Award, I came into contact with a company in my area, with which I worked for a few months to improve the product, but never come to a conclusion or a production agreement – he told us – I am currently in communication with a French-Canadian company with which we are testing and evaluating the evolution of the product “.

The projects of 2022

During the selection phase of the award participants, the competing projects can already be discovered on the Dyson website pending the final selection. Among those approved so far there are a soap dispenser-grater for the kitchen; an innovative vertical farm for urban facades that uses plants to capture CO2; a new generation garbage truck that incinerates waste on site and uses the exhaust gases to power the engine; a digital dispenser that aims to solve the problem of infections caused by the gauze forgotten in the patient’s body during operations.

All ideas that try to deal with small and large problems of society: sometimes they are a bit clumsy attempts to solve a simple problem with complex or difficult to replicate solutions put into production, other times they are real strokes of genius from the great potential. But in the end the sense of the James Dyson award is just that: giving engineers and designers a platform to express new, innovative and sometimes a little crazy ideas and projects. Not so much to break through with a product or a startup that will make millions, but to try to solve a real problem with the power of design, experimenting with design and learning the importance of prototyping and design thinking.
