How to backup iPhone

by admin

Back up the data contained in your digital devices is critical. Even more so in the case of a mobile phone, which can be lost, stolen or broken. For example, it is a good idea to make a backup before going on vacation.

In this guide we explain how to backup Apple iPhone using two different techniques. Both systems are free (if not for the online space, which may not be enough), let’s see them below.

The 2 ways to backup with the iPhone
Apple allows you to make backups in two different ways: using iCloud to make a wireless backup every time the phone is connected to a wi-fi network; using iTunes, Apple’s free software, on a PC or Mac.

Both procedures are based on the same method, both backups can be used to reconfigure a phone from scratch, but they are not used to recover individual deleted information. In short, if you delete a number from the phone book by mistake, this is not the way to recover it.

iCloud vs iTunes
The first method, based on iCloud, uses the 5 Gb of free storage that Apple allocates to every user with Apple Id. Attention: even if you have multiple devices (for example, an iPhone and an iPad) the giga available are always the same 5, which are shared via iCloud for different functions, such as synchronizations (Safari favorites), archiving (e-mail ), saves (documents saved via iCloud from the various apps installed, including Whatsapp), photographs and other elements on the phone. In the 5 Gb however, neither the purchased or downloaded apps (which can be re-downloaded as many times as you want, but you must make sure that the documents created by them are saved separately) nor the music and films purchased, nor the photographs of the albums shared with others are counted. .

To increase space must be bought from Apple, which sells different denominations (50, 200 Gb and 2 terabytes): the advantage of this backup method is that it is automatic as soon as you connect to the wi-fi and does not require a computer. Plus it’s safe: Apple takes care to make sure the data in the backup is safe.

The second method is based on the iTunes, the app used to buy music and whose functions have been partially surpassed by those of Music and Tv +. In any case, iTunes allows you to make backups on your computer’s hard drive, either on a PC or on a Mac. The procedure requires that you have enough space available on your computer, but you must also physically connect the phone to the computer. Also, be careful to protect the computer that contains your phone’s backup: if it breaks or is lost, the backup will also be lost.

Backup with iTunes
Once you have connected your phone to your computer with iTunes and authenticated the device, you can perform both the synchronization and the actual backup. These are two separate operations: the most important is the backup because it allows you to make a copy of almost all the data contained in the phone and almost all the settings (apart from the photos already stored in the cloud, the purchased music and the real apps and own).

The procedure requires you to connect the phone to the computer with the supplied Lightning cable, authorize the computer and follow the instructions on the page Summary simply pressing the button Back up now. The backup is saved securely or not by a password (to prevent it from being seen by malicious people in the event of theft of the computer) and is saved with the date and time in which it was made. When you need to set up a new phone or reconfigure your own, the newest backup is the one with the most recent date.

To be sure that the backup has actually been done and is complete, you can go on the item Devices of the menu Edit (on Pc) or Preferences (on Mac) and display the device name with the date and time of the backup: if there is a padlock next to the name it means that the backup is password protected.

Backup with iCloud
The procedure is much simpler: just go to the Settings phone, select your username and tap iCloud. Here you select Backup iCloud, it is checked that e is activated you press Back up now if you are connected with the wi-fi and you remain connected until the end of the procedure.

Still in the iCloud menu, inside Cloud storage space and inside Manage space you can select your device and verify that the backup was done with the time and size.

Backup done via wi-fi can be very slow and depends on both Apple’s servers and your own upload speed, usually much lower than the download rate that telecom operators advertise. An ADSL with 20 megabits per second in download has, for example, an upload speed of 1 megabit per second, which in practice can be more than halved (up to 400 Kilobits per second).

The backup to transfer data from an old device
Backups are used in case of phone trouble but especially when you buy a new one. During the first configuration of an iPhone, after entering the Apple Id, you can choose to restore the phone from a local backup or via iCloud. The same procedure is also possible using the cable, connecting the phone to the PC or Mac with iTunes.
