Weaning is an important period in a baby’s life, it consists in the gradual transition from a diet based exclusively on milk to a more complete one. “We start with a potato, a courgette and a carrot, then corn and tapioca or cream of rice and freeze-dried meat, extra virgin olive oil”, explains pediatrician Elena Bozzola, national secretary of the Italian Society of Pediatrics. When to start? “It depends on the child, but it is recommended between four and six months of life”, adds the pediatrician.

Mom and dad’s job isn’t always easy. The relationship between parent and child is important during this essential step, as well as an adequate time frame for the introduction of foods, quantities and choice of foods. Here then is the pediatrician’s advice for a peaceful weaning: “Let’s not force the baby, let’s allow him to touch the food but not mess too much, let’s not insist but don’t give up easily, don’t worry about how much he eats but how much he grows”.
