Clips
Apple’s Clips app is the perfect solution for those who need to edit short videos for publication on social media: it is designed to make videos, Stories or other content to share online. In addition to merging existing clips, new ones can be recorded directly from the app, with a mode of use that reminiscent of that of TikTok or the Reel of Instagram.

Although the setting is mainly playful, with an interface designed for a young target, the app can be used as a quick editing tool on iPad (but also on iPhone). In particular, the functions that allow you to easily add titles to the video or a comment track with your voice, to be recorded directly from the device, are very useful. To try, even if they do not have to do directly with the assembly, the functions related to augmented reality, which work very well and allow you to add fun effects to your movies.

iMovie
If you need a no-frills editing, two video tracks are enough (one overlaid on the main timeline) and you don’t have to do advanced audio editing, iMovie is the perfect tool. Like all Apple software, it is optimized for iPad hardware and the editing, rendering and exporting performance is very good even on non-Pro models of the Apple tablet. iMovie for iPad handles i video in 4K and especially those made in Dolby Vision with the latest generation iPhones.

As in Mac version, iMovie for iPad offers a standard non-linear editing interface, with the ability to import clips directly from the library or from your own files (locally or from iCloud). In the latest versions, Apple has implemented advanced functions such as chroma key to add backgrounds on a green screen or customizable animated titles.

For those who don’t need complex multi-track edits, color correction and overly complex audio editing, iMovie is an almost perfect app: we have used it many times to quickly edit videos to be sent online in a short time, which require simple editing, some transitions, background music and a voice-over. The export speed e rendering of the videos (even those in 4K) is great and the ability to quickly export the project to continue work on the Mac is the ecosystem advantage that makes the difference compared to similar software of the competition.

Adobe Premiere Rush
Anyone who has learned editing in Adobe Premiere Pro will appreciate knowing that there is an iPad version of the software with simplified functions, optimized for creating videos for online publishing. The app is called Premiere Rush e sta a Premiere Pro come iMovie sta a Final Cut Pro X. There are fewer tools, the interface is much simpler, and the structure is optimized for quick editing, inserting titles and effects. Also noteworthy is the presence of a magnetic timeline (the clips do not leave free spaces in the main track) which the “Premierists”, unlike those coming from Final Cut Pro X, are probably not used to.

If you already have a subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud, the app is included in the plan, otherwise it costs 12.19 euros per month; the free trial version gives you access to all features, but is limited to 3 exports and offers only 2GB of Adobe cloud storage.

LumaFusion
If you have more serious intentions and want to perform a professional-grade editing using the iPad, the choice today can only fall on LumaFusion. The application developed by LumaTouch is the heir of Pinnacle Studio (which many will remember as a historical name in the field of video editing) and brings editing functions worthy of professional computer software to iPads. Who is used to the so-called editing A/B, on LumaFusion you will feel at ease. The app allows you to manage up to 6 video tracks and 6 superimposed audio tracks. The timeline is magnetic by default, but there is an option to work in the Premiere Pro style as well, without the clips automatically aligning.

The developers of Luma Fusion managed to find an excellent compromise between a professional interface and basic functions, which helps beginners discover everything that can be done with the program as they go. In this sense, the many official tutorials and the large online community of people who use the app also help.

Edit videos shot with iPhone and transferred to iPad with AirDrop it’s as simple as connecting an external SSD to import and edit videos taken with a professional camera. The whole editing process can then take place in conditions of so-called resolution independence, ie without having to bind to the resolution of the clips right from the opening of a project. The selection of resolution of the movie is done at the end, at the moment of export, with automatic downscaling or upscaling of the clips with different resolutions.

To the professionals of the editing it will also be interesting to know that with LumaFusion it is also possible to work with files shot in Log, that is the way in which professional cameras are able to capture the maximum dynamic range. The LumaTouch app allows you to import your own Lut (the preset profiles for processing Log images) as you would with any other professional software. Self you shoot movies with FilmicPro on iPhone in Log, for example, LumaFusion offers a dedicated Lut for post processing. And when you reach the limits of the app’s functionality, no problem: that’s enough an export to Xml of the project to go to work directly on Final Cut Pro X, recalling the videos from the same external hard drive used for importing to iPad.

The last consideration must be made on price of the app: 32.99 euros. Anyone who has dealt with professional editing apps knows that they are very few, when you consider the range of features that the developers of LumaTouch have managed to integrate into the application. AND there is also another advantage: it’s a one-time price, not a subscription like Premiere Rush. You buy it once and the software remains available forever on all compatible devices (including the iPhone and iMac M1, where iPad apps can also run).

(There is an in-app purchase of € 70 per year, which is called StoryBlocks but does not enable access to a library of stock videos and does not serve to unlock additional functions)
