On the occasion of the World Heart Day, which is celebrated on 29 September, Maria Cecilia Hospital in Cotignola is mobilized with the initiative “Le Strade del Cuore”, aimed at raising awareness among citizens on the risks of cardiovascular diseases, on good prevention practices and on importance of periodic check-ups.

Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 September from 10.00 to 18.00, at the Esp Shopping Center, the Advanced Mobile Clinic of GVM Care & Research and the doctors of Maria Cecilia Hospital will be available to citizens for free consultations to assess heart health. Within the outpatient clinics of the mobile clinic, the following will be performed: blood pressure measurement, weight and waist measurement, lipid profile assessment, blood glucose measurement and heart rhythm control. At the end of the course, the final consultation with the doctor. The initiative is sponsored by the Municipality of Ravenna and the Italian Foundation for the Heart.

Cardiovascular diseases still represent the main cause of death in our country, equal to 35.8% of all deaths, with a higher incidence among the female population: 38.8% women compared to 32.5% in males (source Scientific Document “Prevention Italy 2021” – SIPREC). In an already complex framework, the Covid-19 pandemic has produced a significant increase in mortality from these diseases.

“The growth in the numbers relating to cardiovascular diseases can be reversed thanks to awareness and prevention campaigns just like this one – explains Dr. Andrea Fisicaro, Cardiologist at Maria Cecilia Hospital -. In some cases, cardiovascular diseases are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, easily equivocal with a period of fatigue or stress, so it is important to get people to undergo periodic screenings. By identifying early cardiovascular risk factors and consequently correcting one’s lifestyle, it is possible to decrease the possibility of incurring acute events or chronic diseases ”.

From this perspective, scientific research is also essential to reverse the trend and combat mortality from cardiovascular diseases. “Maria Cecilia Hospital has, in recent years, developed not only clinical but also basic research, with a” translational “research approach, that is, with the aim of facilitating the application of basic research results at the patient level as soon as possible – comments Elena Tremoli, Scientific Director and Director of the Experimental Laboratory of Maria Cecilia Hospital -. More generally, our cardiovascular research addresses broad issues ranging from prevention, improving the pathways, to the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. This path is not only fundamental for the identification of new treatments but, through the continuous interaction between the hospital and the territory, it is also fundamental for safeguarding the health of the citizen himself and designing an ever more personalized medicine “.
