Huawei GT 3 Pro, how it is and how the new smartwatch works

To tell you what the new Huawei GT 3 Pro is like, designed for athletes but perfect for use in everyday lifea premise is a must: a smartwach, to compete fully with a traditional watch, must necessarily follow the aesthetic perfection. IS clear, we are talking about an object whose digital functions remain more important than the design. But a smartwatch, unlike a smartphone, responds to a century-old tradition. To that first wristwatch invented in the late 19th century by Patek Philippe. To the work of craftsmen who have forged iconic objects in the past.

No one can delude himself, today, to produce a smartwatch capable of completely replacing analog watches. But the point is another: it would be wrong not to try to do that. And perhaps this is the spirit that animates Huawei’s development and research in the field of wearable, a market on which the Shenzen company has focused heavily in recent years. This was confirmed by William Tian, President of Huawei CBG for Western Europe: “Our launch event in Milan demonstrates Huawei’s commitment in the Health and Fitness category, but also our desire to focus on developing wearables with a distinctive aesthetics and unbeatable functionality ”.

In Milan, in fact, the main innovations ofevento House of Huawei there were just three devices that are worn on the wrist: he GT 3 Pro, he Watch Fit 2 e he Band 7. Of course, Richard Yu – once again only virtually present – also presented the new one smartphone pieghevole Mate Xs 2but the enthusiasm for the new foldable died out when Huawei made it known that the device, as it was to be expected, will not arrive in Italy.

The new GT 3 Pro is available in two versions: one model has the case in titanium 46 mm and a 1.43-inch Amoled HD (466×466) display. The other, slightly smaller and certainly more suitable for the female wrist, with a 43 mm house and a 1.32-inch display (also Amoled HD), is in ceramic. Both are equipped with a durable sapphire crystal.

What we tested in the days leading up to the launch event, is the GT 3 Pro with a titanium case and black fluoroelastomer strap. When opening the watch box, the first thought is “How nice”. When you take the device out of the box, the second thought is “Damn, it’s done just right”.

The first impact with the GT 3 Pro obviously takes place with the display off. Yet there is something about this smartwatch from large but extremely proportioned case, with an elegant matte finish, which brings to mind those ‘important’ watches received on special occasions: confirmations, birthdays, anniversaries. Traditional watches with hands and everything else, in short, of historical brands or perhaps of the moment. IS a sensation stemming from a set of factors: the design of a ‘full’ case that hides the inserts of the strap, the slightly angular lines at the top and bottom that give the watch a decidedly modern lookbut above all the nature of materials.

The titanium case guarantees a impact and scratch resistance excellent. And the same can be said for the most risky part in a watch, namely the glass. The Gt 3 Pro is protected by a sapphire crystal which on the Mohs scale – relating to the most resistant materials in nature – is inferior only to diamond. This means that an accidental bump will not leave a scratch or a groove on the glass, as often happens with watches – whether digital or analog – of the economic range.

Quality obviously pays for itself. And let’s say right away that the GT 3 Pro with the titanium case (46 mm) has an important price: 500 euro (in promotion until June 26). You pay the same amount for the model with the smaller ceramic case (and with a white leather strap), to which 100 euros must be added if you also prefer the ceramic strap.

Finally, the appearance of the GT 3 Pro can change depending on thegraphic interface you choose for the display. You can choose, for free, between 15 digital ‘dials’ ranging from minimalist graphics, certainly more elegant, to the richest in data, chaotic but certainly useful for sportsmen or those who simply want to keep the state of their body under control.

I premium material make the GT 3 Pro not exactly a featherweight. If you come from a low cost analog watch, let’s say “battle”, the weight difference will be immediately evident. Compared to the GT 2 Pro, the thickness has been reduced by 0.5 mm but the device is still felt on the wrist. You get used to it, of course, but sometimes you feel the need for something lighter on the wrist.

The ferrule of the GT 3 Pro allows you to access the smartwatch app screen, zoom in on items and scroll through content. The operating system HarmonyOS 2developed entirely by Huawei, on the new watch is very responsive.

The more discreet button, which is located under the ring, allows direct access to the functions for those who practice sports, and therefore to the training plans. There are one hundred in all, the modalities available: they range from corsa to swimming until golf. Each session involves the collection of data to help plan subsequent ones. Compared to past models, the GT 3 Pro is defined by Huawei “More resistant to water”. We haven’t had a chance to test it at great depths, of course, but the device is guaranteed for diving up to 30 meters. And for this reason it provides interesting functions also for those approaching freediving.

Behind the case, in contact with the wrist, are the sensors that allow the detection of heartbeat, measuring the level of oxygen in the blood and also changes in body temperature. We remind you that these measurements are indicative but cannot replace those obtained from traditional medical devices.

There is, of course, the pedometer – extremely precise, we must say – a system for calculating the calorie burn and sleep monitoring. In this regard, returning to the size of the GT 3 Pro, we would like to say that, after using it all day, there is a need to spare the wrist at least at night. But this can be a subjective feeling, or rather a need.

Huawei also offers the occasional test on its smartwatch – or alternatively the automatic measurement – of stress levels. But even in this case, the reliability of the results has to be verified.

However, the data released by Huawei regarding theautonomy of the smartwatch, which in the case of the titanium edition would reach 14 days (if used in a non-intensive way). Well after 48 hours of use – not intensive, and therefore with the display always on deactivated – the level of the drums it fell just 20%. What we did with the GT 3 Pro was essentially consult the notifications of WhatsApp and other apps – messages, Twitter, New York Times – view incoming calls and monitor physical activity. It is therefore conceivable that a complete charging cycle will ensure an autonomy of the smartwatch of at least ten days, if the device is obviously not used to make calls instead of the smartphone. Charging is wireless and is 30% faster – claims Huawei – compared to that of the previous GT 2 Pro.

You can call someone and answer directly from the smartwatch, that it is not equipped with eSim: everything happens thanks to the bluetooth connection. The audio quality of the calls is more than decent, that of the musica that we tried to listen to from the even surprising wrist: there is no reason, theoretically, to use a smartphone to listen to songs, but in case it should be used for outdoor physical exercise or for a yoga or meditation session, the notes that come out of the integrated speakers in the watch case they are not at all to be disdained.

The drawback not to be underestimated is that the smartwatch cannot connect to Spotify and Amazon Music, then you have to manually add the songs – in Mp3 format – to the device, choosing them from the smartphone memory. This presupposes the use of MP3 songs already in our possession, purchased from an online store and in any case not coming from a streaming subscription.

The entire management of the smartwatch takes place through the app Health di Huawei, which in spite of the name is not only the hub designed to collect data relating to workouts carried out with the watch on the wrist. The apps for the GT 3 Pro are downloaded from the AppGallery, the store of the Shenzen company, and the downside is that the offer is still very limited. Different speech for those that can be installed on the smartphone and interact with the watch: just look for – always on the AppGallery – those that have the words “Supports Huawei Watch”. Like Navigation Watch & Maps, for example, which allows you to follow the directions of Google Maps directly from your wrist and therefore without having to take your phone out of your pocket.

“The wearable market is constantly growing and demonstrates the interest and attention towards devices that can bring real benefit to everyday life – said Pier Giorgio Furcas, Deputy General Manager Huawei Consumer Business Group Italy -. the launch of the Huawei GT 3 Pro we have perfected existing features and added new ones thinking about those who are passionate about sports and not only “.

What we like

The materials and the design
The many training modes available
The great battery life and super fast charging

What we don’t like

The limited offer of apps for the smartwatch
The inability to respond to notifications directly from the smartwatch
The weight is not excessive but the watch on the wrist is ‘felt’
