Humanity Mother of the Lord grows by looking at the needs of the territory: health and prevention find even more space with the opening of the new building in via Bettinelli in Castellanza which, in continuity with the nearby hospital, combines personalized treatment paths, a multidisciplinary approach to therapies, technological innovation and digital services.

The new structure, inaugurated today in the presence of the mayor of Castellanza, Mirella Cerini, and of the regional and local authorities, is spread over an area of over 3,500 square meters in which there are 38 clinics, of which 2 are surgical, the collection center, the Check-up area, the diagnostic imaging and the new Ophthalmology Center at the vanguard.
“Over the course of its 60-year history, the hospital has been constantly renewed, also from a structural point of view, with an eye to the future and to the needs of patients – he says. Under construction since the end of 2019, its construction suffered a setback during the pandemic linked to Covid-19, which saw us take the field with all our professionals to face the emergency. Humanitas Mater Domini, in fact, a spoke structure for the regional network, has dedicated more than 80% of its beds to Covid patients and has made significant investments to create safe paths and new areas in the emergency room and intensive care to manage simultaneously Covid and non-Covid patients. The hospital has also become a reference point for vaccinations for frail patients and teachers. Today, the construction of the new building makes it possible to respond to the renewed needs of the territory, strengthening the prevention and early diagnosis services, always in continuity with the hospital ».
University teaching, to train new health professionals
The hospital is also growing by looking at the training of future health professionals. The first three-year degree course in Nursing at Humanitas University in Castellanza kicks off on 6 October, in collaboration with LIUC.
A project that enriches the educational offer of the territory and which sees among the distinctive aspects the close integration with the hospital in the choice of teachers and the possibility of internships for students, which will also take place in affiliated locations in the area. “The healthcare of the future – characterized by the progressive aging of the population, an increase in chronic conditions and, above all, by the technological and digital revolution – requires a profound rethinking of the formation of the human capital that composes it – he comments Marco Montorsi, Rector of Humanitas University -. Hospitals will be increasingly digital and a reference center to offer technologically advanced therapies, with important organizational changes. For this reason, university degree and post-degree courses will be increasingly transdisciplinary, with great attention also to research and clinical training which will benefit from efficient and integrated hospital and territorial networks ».
For the 25 students who will begin the first year of the course, the lessons will alternate between the classrooms of LIUC – Cattaneo University and the Simulation Center of Humanitas University in Pieve Emanuele (Milan), to complete the training with an advanced simulation course. .
“The relationship between LIUC and Humanitas University – comments the Rector of LIUC, Federico Visconti – will develop in the context of the Degree in Nursing. But it is not just a question of teaching at our facility. The objective is broader: to enhance the spaces for collaboration in the field of healthcare management, in courses and in research. In fact, a great opportunity for discussion and cross fertilization ».
Vaccines, research and the impact against Covid-19
From 21 February 2020, Humanitas Mater Domini has converted 80% of its spaces to assist Covid patients. A commitment to the territory also confirmed during the vaccination campaign, in which the hospital became part of the network of centers identified by the Lombardy Region for the administration of the anti SARS-CoV-2 vaccine to frail patients and school staff. And right from the vaccination campaign of health personnel, it was possible to obtain valuable information for the population thanks to the Humanitas model that integrates clinic, research and training.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, doctors, nurses, social and health workers, technicians but also staff of Humanitas Mater Domini have taken part, on a voluntary basis, in the COVID Care Program, the first large Italian epidemiological study, conducted on over 4 thousand professionals of the Humanitas Lombard structures, which expanded the knowledge on the antibody response and protection from the virus.
«The study – explains the professor Maria Rescigno, head of the Covid Care Program, researcher, lecturer and deputy director with responsibility for Research at Humanitas University – continued in 2021 and made it possible to determine, for example, that a dose of vaccine was sufficient for former Covid patients, information that has helped the health authorities to define the priorities for access to vaccines in a time of scarcity of resources, with a view to sustainability of the national campaign. The Humanitas Research Center also contributed to determining the genetic causes related to more serious manifestations of the disease and to identifying parameters that guided doctors in the choice of therapies, as happened with the PTX3 biomarker, a molecule involved in inflammation that helps to evaluate the state of severity of the disease “.
Humanity Mother of the Lord is a multi-specialist Clinical Institute oriented towards prevention, diagnosis and treatment through outpatient and hospitalization activities. Founded in Castellanza (VA) in 1962, since 2007 it has been part of the Humanitas Group, present in Rozzano, Milan, Bergamo, Turin and Catania.
