“I, an oncology patient, have entrusted myself to medicine but I respect those who do not think like me”

The position taken by the Civic Endymion on the Green pass and vaccinations against Covid-19 caused a lot of discussion in Valdobbiadene (see article).

In the country’s main Facebook group, citizens have expressed their thoughts on the subject and very distant positions have emerged from this debate.

Many were struck by the testimony of Giovanna Capretta, a local freelancer who is part of the group of administrators of the Valdobbiadenese Facebook page, who wanted to share his story on social networks, publishing a comment in the post where the words of Simone Adami, group leader of the Civic Endymion.

Capretta, a cancer patient, is one of the first people to have received the third dose of the Covid vaccine in Veneto.

“When I was diagnosed with my first cancer there were a number of people who started giving me advice based on some ‘I read that’, ‘they told me that’, ‘I think I heard that’ – comments the woman – Among these many told me ‘don’t trust chemo, they are poisons! Don’t let them do the radio, it burns you and ruins you. ‘ All good at giving advice on the skin of others. And so on. But when ‘your’ life is in danger, you just have to make a choice. If it is right, well, if it is wrong you ‘pay’. “

I have chosen to trust medicine, doctors, those who study and practice in the field – he continues – I started in 2014, I had two surgeries, I underwent chemotherapy, radiotherapy and monoclonal therapy for both cancers, I finished the latest therapies about a year ago. Will I have other relapses? I do not know. It is probable. Was I right to take these treatments? I don’t know, but I’m here to tell it. They called me from oncology to make appointments for the vaccine in the spring. I did. They called me from oncology last week for the third dose and I got it on Monday”.

“My choice (and I stress ‘mine’) continues to be to trust the doctors, those who study in the field, those who know more than me – he adds – Am I doing well? I don’t know but I’m still here to tell it. By this I just mean that everyone should be free to make their own choices without being attacked by anyone. I respect those who decide not to get vaccinated because they made their choice. I respect those who decide to get vaccinated because they made their choice. I do not get angry with those who judge me, advise me or try to convince me: simply, and with all the peace for myself and for others, I continue to make my choice on the path I have taken ”.

Capretta’s decision was to trust and entrust “to those who are competent in the matter.”

“If they had wanted to ‘take me out’ they would have simply not treated me, right? – goes on – What sense would it be to invest thousands of euros of public money to treat a person and then kill them with a vaccine? I choose to live and feel good; I hope and trust that the road is the right one. There is no drug, therapy or cure that can provide absolute certainty of recovery ”.

“Chemotherapy does not ensure that a tumor will not come back, nor that it will heal the one in progress, it does not even guarantee that it will pass unscathed into our body: the consequences are there – he concludes -, but if you find yourself struggling with a tumor, choosing to have it is one chance. Un vaccine cannot promise not to have side effects, nor provide the certainty of immunizing against a disease: the human body has so many ways of reacting that the unexpected is always possible. But choosing to do so still represents a possibility”.
