“I suffer from autoimmune diseases, can I reconstruct the breast with the prosthesis?”

by admin

I need some clarification regarding breast implants (CPG 311 and CPG 321), having to sign an informed consent before implantation following mastectomy. The information I was given concerns the risk of developing anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Already having some problems with a very unbalanced immune system (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Sjogren’s syndrome, SIBO) what do you recommend? Thanks. Yours sincerely.

Doctor replies Andrea Sagona, breast surgeon at the Humanitas Cancer Center Breast Unit:

Dear Reader,
the prostheses indicated by you are those authorized for post mastectomy reconstruction. The risk of anaplastic lymphoma related to the use of prostheses is very low and can be resolved, in most cases, with the removal of the implants and the capsule. Further studies and evaluations must be carried out regarding the hypothetical relationship between breast implants and autoimmune diseases and other clinical pictures such as ASIA Syndrome and Breast Implant Illness (BII). In your specific case, the opinion of an immunologist would be useful for a better evaluation of the autoimmune clinical picture and a further opinion on the implantation of the prosthesis.
