In the period following the summer, it can happen that you feel tired during the day. This condition can make us irritable, as we are unable to carry out all our daily chores as we would like. So, we begin to ask ourselves what is happening and how we can counter this phenomenon. However, if tiredness and sleepiness accompany us during the day, it is advisable to adopt these solutions. First of all, it means that the time has come to consult the specialist. In fact, if it is not just a passing exhaustion but it persists, we must run for cover. Daytime fatigue can result from poor sleep at night. Therefore, not being able to regain the necessary concentration and energy causes negative repercussions on health, also compromising social relationships. But, let’s get to what the causes of this chronic fatigue can be.

The causes of chronic fatigue

Tiredness and sleepiness during the day can hide problems such as depression, stress, anxiety or other pathologies. Among the latter, we have: diabetes, alterations in sodium levels, narcolepsy, hypothyroidism, hypercalcemia. Or, it may happen that taking certain medications, such as antihistamines and tranquilizers, can cause excessive daytime fatigue. In addition, the aforementioned symptoms could be the warning signs of sleep apnea syndrome. The latter is characterized by the arrest of breathing during sleep, for about 10 or more seconds. This can cause small continuous awakenings that fragment the rest and make it not effective. Hence: exhaustion, drowsiness, even during the day.

The first cause on which to intervene is, therefore, insomnia. The specialist may prescribe tests such as polysomnography, to detect the presence of sleep apnea. Or, depending on the type of patient and symptoms, he may order other investigations. At that point, having identified the cause, the doctor will indicate a targeted therapy, prescribing, if necessary, the intake of drugs.

In general, however, to improve the quality of sleep, we can follow the following rules:

1) establish sleep patterns as regular as possible, trying to go to bed and wake up at the same time;

2) avoid having dinner just before going to bed;

3) maintain a room temperature that is neither too hot nor too cold;

4) do not take exciting substances, such as green tea, coffee, ginseng, as early as the early afternoon;

5) turn off TV, PC and smartphone at least half an hour before going to sleep;

6) take remedies that aid sleep, such as passion flower or valerian.
