To date, the leading cause of death in Italy is linked to cardiovascular disease. Contrary to popular belief, in fact, this sad record is not attributable to pathologies of a neoplastic nature. For this reason, the medical sector is fighting loudly for greater protection of cardiovascular health, even if we often pretend not to hear.

In fact, we are not always so attentive to personal care and to limit excesses and attitudes that could be harmful. Above all, the well-known cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and out-of-reach levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

As far as cholesterol levels are concerned, we have repeatedly reiterated the importance of a healthy diet. An unregulated diet high in fat and low in fiber could be a real doom for heart health. Too high levels of cholesterol, in fact, could lead to a deposit of fat in the blood vessels and the formation of so-called atherosclerotic plaques. The formation of these deposits contributes to the narrowing of blood vessels and, in the case of occlusion, to strokes and heart attacks. Unfortunately, this condition, called hypercholesterolemia, does not give symptoms except possibly some particular signs around the eyes. In case of doubts, however, a specific examination and a consultation with your doctor remain essential.

Yet from the British Heart Foundation, it would seem that in addition to cholesterol and triglycerides, a widespread habit also increases the risk of cardiovascular episodes.

Not more than an hour

From a study published in the pages of the Veronesi Foundation it seems that the time spent in front of the television increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. The study followed about half a million subjects for 12 years, evaluating their genetic predisposition to heart problems.

The results of the research would have shown that, regardless of genetic predisposition, time in front of the TV would increase the risk of heart attacks.

Comparing the various subjects, in fact, it would appear that those who spend less than 4 hours in front of the TV would reduce the risk by 6%, while under an hour, even by 16%.

The reason is not directly related to the appliance as to its consequences, i.e. a sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle. People who watch television most do so in the evening, after dinner, by increasing blood lipid and glucose levels. Another aspect to consider is snacks in front of your favorite programs, often high in fat and salt.

What to do?

This does not mean that television is banned, rather experts recommend using your time more constructively. It is therefore better to put the remote control aside and dedicate yourself more consistently to healthy physical activity and better nutrition.
