In case of bladder infections, here are 3 ways to give relief before antibiotic therapy

by admin

Many women have problems related to urinary tract and bladder infections. The risk of a woman experiencing a urinary infection in her lifetime is about 50%, while that of having recurrent infections is about 25%. Generally, the medical treatment prescribed in outpatient clinics is antibiotic treatment, with broad-spectrum antibiotics. Often, however, this type of treatment does not solve the problem and on the contrary, in the case of relapses, the risk of selecting bacteria resistant to antibiotics increases. In case of bladder infections, here are 3 ways to give relief before antibiotic therapy.

Vincenzo Tiberio, Pasteur and molds

In 1895, a young doctor, later an officer in the Navy, wrote these words regarding some molds he was studying: “The author observed the action of the [ā€¦] Penicillium glaucum and Aspergillus flavescens [ā€¦] on some pathogenic schizomycetes [ā€¦] finding them provided, especially that of the aspergillus, of considerable bactericidal power “. This is the first evidence of the existence of an antibiotic function in a living being. That doctor was called Vincenzo Tiberio.

Thirty years later, in 1928, Alexander Fleming observed a petri dish in which a mold had grown in a London laboratory. Around it, bacterial colonies did not grow due to its antibacterial action. This discovery earned him the Nobel Prize in 1945.

What happens when bacteria are treated with antibiotics? Antibiotics act on the structure of the bacterium, effectively eliminating and killing it. Randomly, some bacteria may be able to survive even in the presence of an antibiotic. This is antibiotic resistance, a huge problem that could make the use of these drugs useless. Intensive use of antibiotics increases the chance of having resistant bacteria.

Antibiotics and drug resistance

As mentioned above, antibiotics are the most used and most effective drug for bladder infections. Antibiotics, in some circumstances, are life-saving drugs and certainly one of the most effective treatments for infections.

However, many women, especially those with recurrent urinary tract infections, raise serious doubts about the exclusive use of antibiotics. These are well-founded fears precisely because of the drug resistance that could develop. Furthermore, antibiotics do not distinguish between microbiome (i.e. the set of bacteria present in our organism normally) and pathogenic bacteria. This means that the microbiome can change, as can the relationship between good and bad bacteria.

So what are the tips to prevent urinary infections and to treat them as a first approach, without immediately resorting to antibiotics?

According to a recently published study (Scott VCS et al, 2021), the strategies can be different, except that women who have a urinary infection must go to a specialist or a primary care physician.

  • increased daily water consumption;
  • first use of anti-inflammatories instead of antibiotics (after medical consultation);
  • taking cranberry supplements.

Urinary tract infection is a common problem for many women. Especially if they occur frequently, it would be better to consult a specialist who could also decide on more accurate tests, to trace the cause.
