The event in question, to which the new outbreak developed in the United Kingdom is linked, is the Boardmasters Festival; the festival is held every August and alternates between live music and surfing competitions. The week after the Boardmasters Festival – which took place from 11 to 15 August – in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, the second highest infection rate in England was recorded. To be able to access the Boardmasters Festival i present therefore had to prove that they had been vaccinated twice, and not only: for the participants, before entering, it was necessary to demonstrate that the second dose had been administered to them at least two weeks before 11 August, date on which the event began. In addition to the NHS Covid Pass, further measures have been taken, such as the negative swab carried out within 24 hours of arrival at the festival or, otherwise, the possibility of demonstrating natural immunity with molecular testing (PCR), of at least 10 days before the event.
Also during the days in which the festival took place, a second test was planned – precisely two days after the start of the event, on 13 August – carried out by those staying at the Boardmasters Festival campsite. Finally, face masks are not compulsory but «Those who prefer to wear them encouraged and welcomed», as can be seen from the official website of the Boardmasters festival. Although the event staff worked closely with the Cornish Council public health team to implement the ‘Above and Beyond National Guidelines’ risk management measures, the consequences were very different from those hoped for. .
