In Palermo, the congress of doctors who treat diabetes: “It’s no longer scary”

The Saracen Center of Isola delle Femmine, near Palermo, will host the 20th national congress of Simdo, Italian Society of Metabolism Diabetes Obesity. Among the topics that will be addressed during the three days open to diabetologists, endocrinologists, dieticians, obesiologists, cardiologists, nephrologists and general practitioners, there will be the recent technological and pharmaceutical innovations which, thanks to a modern multidisciplinary approach, make the care of patients with diabetes.

The inaugural ceremony will take place on Thursday 14 October at 3 pm in the presence of the councilor for education of the Sicilian Region, Roberto Lagalla, the commissioner for the Covid emergency in Palermo, Renato Costa, the president of the Order of Doctors, Toti Amato, of the ‘Green Councilor of the Municipality of Palermo, Sergio Marino. Vincenzo Provenzano, head of the operating unit of diabetology and metabolic diseases of the Civic Hospital of Partinico and national president of Simdo, chaired the congress.

Over one hundred experts from all over Italy will be present, intervening both in person and remotely, over six work sessions, including readings, lectio magistralis and round tables. Great space will be dedicated to new molecules and technologies that are giving exceptional results in the reduction of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack, stroke and heart failure, but also for kidney diseases. Among the topics of discussion, the diabetic foot, the pharmacological approach to obesity, the hundred years of insulin and cardiological and nephrological complications. A round table will be dedicated to the humanization of care at the time of Covid and a symposium will focus on the links between diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Covid from the point of view of clinicians.

“Diabetes is no longer scary,” says Vincenzo Provenzano, president of Simdo. «It is a historic moment, which we do not hesitate to define as revolutionary, thanks to the extraordinary advances in pathophysiological knowledge and the formidable diagnostic-therapeutic innovations. Today, more than ever, an enormous effort is needed in the field of professional updating ”, he adds.

The congress enjoys the patronage, as well as various scientific societies, of the Sicilian Regional Assembly; the regional departments of Health, Education and Vocational Training and Cultural Heritage; of the Municipality of Palermo and the Order of Surgeons and Odondotiatri of the Province of Palermo.
