In the US, investigation into the autopilot of 765 thousand Tesla started

by admin

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (Nhtsa), the US government agency that deals with road safety, has opened a formal investigation into Tesla Autopilot, the partially automated guidance system of Elon Musk’s electric car company. The agency believes Autopilot has difficulty recognizing emergency stop vehicles. Since 2018, Nhtsa has identified 11 incidents in which Tesla cars with Autopilot or Traffic Aware Cruise Control on hit stationary vehicles, signaling their presence with lights on or warning triangle. After the news, Tesla shares dropped 1.6% in the premarket; in the last week, it gained 0.48%, since the beginning of the year it is up by 1.63%.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the initiation of the investigation in a post posted on its website. The agency says it has identified 11 incidents, from 2018 to date, in which Tesla’s autopilot or its speed control system would not have worked properly. Such systems can keep a vehicle in the middle of the lane and correct safety distances. The investigations concern the Y, X, S and Model 3 models from 2014 to 2021: in total, about 765 thousand vehicles in the US alone. Autopilot has often been misused by Tesla drivers, who have been caught driving drunk or even sitting in the back seat.

The agency has activated investigation teams on 31 accidents involving driver assistance systems since June 2016. Of those accidents, 25 involved Tesla Autopilot in which 10 deaths were reported, according to data released by the agency. Tesla and other manufacturers warn that drivers using safety systems must always be ready to intervene. Teslas using the system crashed into a semi-trailer crossing in front of them, into emergency vehicles and a road barrier. Last June, NHTSA ordered all car manufacturers to report any accidents involving fully autonomous vehicles or partially automated driver assistance systems. The agency has begun to take a stricter stance on automated vehicle safety than in the past.
