Intensive care drops to 5% “The patients are not vaccinated” – breaking latest news

by admin

Two months ago, in mid-April, more than 3,000 people were hospitalized in intensive care for Covid. Yesterday 471: 33 less than the day before. For the first time since the beginning of the second wave, the number of seriously ill patients has fallen below 500, with 5% of beds occupied throughout Italy. A credit that goes in large part to the mass vaccination campaign: 27% of the population aged 12 and over has completed the immunization cycle. But we are not yet at the zero level: where are people with severe forms of Covid today? Lombardy has the largest number of ICU admissions (92), followed by Lazio (85). Five regions are under 10 cases, three to zero (Basilicata, Molise and Valle d’Aosta). Yesterday there were 9 new entries throughout Italy, against 26 the day before: a figure that had not been recorded since October. The hospitalized with symptoms in the ordinary wards are 3,064, down by 269 units.

Identikit of the sick

Net of the concern for the Delta variant (which still has a limited circulation in Italy) and considering that in addition to the vaccinated there are the cured, who are the seriously ill? “Long-term inpatients or unvaccinated people,” he told the agency Ansa Francesco Dentali, director of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Circolo di Varese hospital -. We take care of taking care of them, they understand for themselves that they have made a mistake and regret not having protected themselves ». “It is mostly unvaccinated subjects – he confirms Roberto Fumagalli, director of the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation of the Niguarda Hospital in Milan, as well as a professor at Bicocca University – or who became infected in the window between the first and second dose of vaccine. People in intensive care, today in Lombardy, are 61-62 years old on average. I would say that thanks to vaccinations we have protected the range of the elderly. In fact, the age of admissions for Covid has lowered: the identikit is between 55 and 70 years old. However, the severe forms, albeit few, are always the same and frightening. Certainly we doctors have become better at treating them, even in the absence of specific drugs ». Infections also affect young people more and more: the average age of positives is 39 years.

The resuscitations

Despite everything, it seems a distant nightmare: on April 15 Lombardy had 739 people in intensive care, down to 390 on May 15 and today below 100. “The situation is going in the right direction,” said the governor Attilio Fontana. “Many Covid resuscitations are converted to their pre-pandemic mission – underlines Fumagalli -, in Lombardy as in the rest of Italy. In Niguarda we have only one Covid intensive care, with 8 patients. The last admission to our coronavirus hospital dates back to 10 days ago“. The pressure of the pandemic on the health system has been reduced quickly, also thanks to another factor: the wide vaccination coverage in the category of health professionals. “In the first wave many doctors and nurses became infected, today this no longer happens – confirms Fumagalli -. In this way health care for the few remaining patients is optimal“. Not only that: it is possible to resume the best treatment of those with non-Covid diseases, from tumors to cardiovascular disorders, heavily penalized in recent months.

The covers

Finally, the vaccination campaign. They were administered over 43 million doses: in the over 80 group, 84% of the population is protected with two injections or the single dose of Johnson & Johnson. Worse than the other age groups: between 70-79 years old only 42% are fully vaccinated and it drops to 35% in the 60-69 age group, 24% in 50-59 year olds, 16% in 40-49 year olds, 13% in 30-39 year olds and 11% in 20-29 year olds. As soon as you start the administrations to the 12-15 year range. All this, however, does not take into account the healed: officially over 4 million, but it is estimated that there may be many more. In the UK, where over half of the adult population is vaccinated with two doses (and 80 per cent with one dose), an increase in infections due to the Delta variant (over 7,000 per day, compared to 1,300 at the beginning of May). The good news is that severe cases are increasing, but much more slowly: from 120 in mid-May it reached 200. A sign that vaccines can protect against severe disease even in the event of a massive spread of a new variant.
