International certification for the clinical-instrumental protocol dedicated to pain in the head and neck area and to anomalies in body balance developed by Professor Michele D’Attilio, associate professor of Orthodontics and gnathology and president of the university’s degree course in Speech Therapy “Gabriele d’Annunzio”.

The novelty concerns the possibility of establishing whether the cause of the musculoskeletal disorder lies in the sight, in the mouth or in other parts of the body, as in the case of plantar support. The protocol also allows us to understand if a bite, the now known dental appliance, can be useful for resolving patient problems and establishing in which position to build the bite itself.

Head-neck pain can be linked to problems that start from the mouth, meaning the latter as the set of teeth, tongue, muscles and joint. A dysfunction affecting the mouth, the so-called “malocclusion”, is capable of generating an alteration in the function of the muscles. Over time, this dysfunction leads to the formation, inside the muscles, of the so-called trigger points, capable of generating pain in the malfunctioning muscle and extending it to the temples, the eye, the back areas of the head and neck. Other symptoms can also be generated, such as ringing and ringing in the ear and postural drifts, which alter the person’s balance.

“The correlation between occlusion and posture takes on an even more important role if transferred to the world of sport. The studies conducted – explains Professor D’Attilio – aim to improve the success rate in the diagnosis and, therefore, in the therapy of patients and the numerous athletes treated over the years. Athletes are very sensitive to postural changes and, by acting through a bite, it is possible to improve body balance, enabling them to express an otherwise unexpressed athletic potential. Since I started dealing with sports gnathology, now more than thirty years ago, – concludes Professor D’Attilio – I have been able to treat many athletes on the national and international territory, including skiers of the world cup circuit and European cup “.
