Apple

As always, Apple has to say goodbye to some old products when it comes out with the latest version of the operating system. When iOS 16 arrives this fall, it will be available for the iPhone 8 and newer models — that is, every phone Apple has released since 2017. This means that the iPhone 6S, iPhone 7 and iPhone SE (1st generation) will not be able to upgrade to iOS 16.

As for iPadOS 16, Apple will drop support for the iPad Mini 4 and iPad Air 2. In fact, given that the Mini 4 and Air 2 debuted in 2015 and 2014 respectively, they are indeed ready for retirement. But let’s be honest, Apple has proven their staying power by supporting them all the way up to iPadOS 15.

watchOS 9 is compatible with Apple Watch Series 4 or later. Apple Watch Series 3 owners used to be able to install watchOS 7 and watchOS 8, but some features were lacking.

macOS Ventura is a bit more complicated. The following devices will be compatible with this macOS:

  • iMac, 2017 and newer models

  • Mac Pro, 2019 and newer models

  • iMac Pro, 2017

  • Mac mini, 2018 and later models

  • MacBook Air, 2018 and newer

  • MacBook, 2017 and newer

  • MacBook Pro, 2017 and newer

In contrast, macOS Monterey is compatible with late 2015 or later iMac, 2017 or later iMac Pro, early 2015 or later MacBook Air, early 2015 or later MacBook Pro, 2013 or later Mac Pro, late 2014 or later Mac mini and early 2016 or later MacBook.

It’s always sad to see Apple say goodbye to older products, even though all the models it dropped support for were released at least five years ago — especially the iPad Air 2 and 2013 Mac Pro having a good inning. While you can still use the older model, Apple definitely hopes that those who stick with the older model will upgrade in the near future.
