Apple has released version 14.5 of iOS and iPadOS, the operating systems for the iPhone and iPad.
Together with various improvements for the stability of the system, the new firmware version collects a series of innovations that the engineers of Cupertino have been working on for some time.
Unlocking the iPhone with the Apple Watch
The need to wear a mask often does not go well with the Face ID, the unlocking system based on the recognition of the face of Apple devices. To remedy the problem, starting with iOS 14.5 Apple Watch owners will be able to use the smart watch to unlock the iPhone it is paired with. The system has been calibrated to make sure that unlocking only takes place when the two devices are very close, to prevent anyone from accessing the iPhone when the owner is in the same room.
As with Apple Pay payments, the Apple Watch must be worn on the wrist and must already be unlocked to allow the operation. When unlocking, the watch vibrates to provide feedback to the wearer and shows a key on the display to lock the iPhone again, useful in case of accidental unlocking. Finally, if the iPhone and the Apple Watch were to disconnect, because they are separated by an excessive distance, the smartphone will automatically activate the lock screen.
