applecompany(Apple) announced Tuesday that it will discontinue the groundbreaking installation that upended the music and electronics industries more than 20 years agoiPod. The iPod was first released in October 2001, and the last existing 7th generation iPod Touch will continue to be sold until stocks are sold out.
Apple released dozens of versions of the iPod over the years, but it was gradually replaced by other devices, especially the iPhone, so starting in 2014, Apple phased out the iPod model. Discontinued first, the iPod classic, the closest version of the original design with a wheel and a small screen. In 2017, Apple discontinued its smallest music players, the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle.
The iPod Touch, which was popular as a cheaper alternative to the iPhone, survived for a few more years. The product was last refreshed in 2019, and it costs $199, well below Apple’s cheapest iPhone, the $429 iPhone SE.
But there are many other ways to get music listening, and Apple sees the iPod as unnecessary.
“From iPhone to Apple Watch to HomePod mini, to Mac, iPad and Apple TV, we’ve integrated an incredible music experience into everything,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing.
Depend onJobs(Steve Jobs)’s iPod, credited with helping Apple from almostbankruptcy, soaring into the sky into a major player in the consumer electronics giant with a market value of $3 trillion. The iPod laid the groundwork for the iPhone, iPad and AirPods, which now make up the majority of Apple’s revenue.
