Is drinking coffee on an empty stomach bad for you? To whom it is not recommended and how to understand if it is not for us

«The answer is complex because both coffee (and the various molecules that compose it) and caffeine are able to stimulate gastric secretion – explains Enzo Spisni, director of the Laboratory of Nutrition Physiology of the University of Bologna -, therefore the stomach mucosa, to produce acid. In fact, when the stomach works, among the things that are secreted there is also hydrochloric acid. This means that if you suffer from gastritis or have some problems related to gastric hyperacidity and the whole spectrum of problems related to it (for example gastroesophageal reflux disease), then coffee on an empty stomach is bad for you.”
