Experts Warn: Daily Honey Consumption Can Be Beneficial but Risky for Some

Health experts have long touted the benefits of incorporating honey into one’s diet on a daily basis. Loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, honey provides a plethora of health benefits such as protecting cells from damage, promoting digestion, fighting infections, and soothing sore throats. However, while honey can be a powerful addition to one’s daily routine, it is crucial to consume it in moderation.

A single spoonful of honey contains approximately 60 calories, making it a calorie-dense food. Consuming excessive amounts of honey can lead to an increased risk of weight gain and obesity. For this reason, it is recommended to limit daily honey intake to 1-2 tablespoons to avoid exceeding daily calorie requirements.

Moreover, parents should be aware that honey is not suitable for children under 12 months of age. The reason behind this warning is the risk of infant botulism, a serious illness caused by botulinum toxin produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. This bacterium can contaminate honey through spores, which are heat-resistant and can survive even after pasteurization.

Infants and newborns have developing immune systems, making them more susceptible to botulism. Symptoms of infant botulism include constipation, difficulty sucking and swallowing, eyelid drooping, muscle weakness, and potentially fatal breathing difficulties. Due to these risks, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly advise against giving honey to children under the age of 12 months.
