by admin

A nice boost of confidence for the national health system that comes out of the test of the pandemic almost with flying colors, at least in the perception of Italians. More than 7 out of 10, in fact, express a positive opinion on the Health Service both at national and regional level, while for one out of 4 Italians the evaluation is of absolute excellence. Data coming from the survey “Priorities and expectations of Italians for a new NHS”, carried out by Ipsos and presented today as part of the 2021 edition of “Inventing for Life Health Summit”, the event organized by Msd Italia which involved some of the most authoritative representatives of the scientific, institutional and industrial world, including the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza and the Minister for Equal Opportunities and the Family, Elena Bonetti.

Focus on health

The survey, conducted in September on a thousand people, revealed the investment priorities and the assessment that Italians make of the national health system. For 52% of Italians, Healthcare is considered the priority area on which to concentrate investments, second only to work (59%) and even more urgent than climate transition (22%), education (16%) and digitization (11%).

“There is a new great awareness that the National Health Service is really the most precious asset we have and we must start investing in it: when I became Minister, two years ago, there were 114 billion on the National Health Fund”, said Minister of Health, Hope. “Today there are 122 of them. I will work so that in the coming months this figure will rise again, starting with the next Budget Law. There is a new, great awareness that the resources that are put into the National Health Service are not mere public expenditure, but they are the biggest investment in people’s quality of life “.

More commitment to prevention

According to 67% of the interviewees, the two areas to focus on to increase screening are oncology and metabolic diseases. During the event, which represents the first major discussion on post-Covid prospects, the importance of universal access to medical care was reiterated on several occasions: “The right to health – said Bonetti, Minister for Equal Opportunities and Family – is a universal right. It activates a responsibility that, universally and collectively, must be assumed in a new and integrated participation between the services of prevention, care, research and scientific promotion, the elements of solidarity. we learned during the pandemic: only through a model of profound co-responsibility, reciprocity, solidarity can we build a community that truly lives up to the time that awaits us “.

Delays in diagnosis and vaccination prevention

Among the issues addressed during the Summit, that of the delays, accumulated during the pandemic, in the paths of diagnosis, treatment and prevention. In fact, in the last year, 3 out of 10 Italians have renounced screening visits (either by choice or by having received cancellation from the structure). The percentage rises to 4 out of 10 in the case of specialist visits.

The delay in vaccination prevention is even more evident, especially for adolescents and adults. In particular, according to the latest available data, vaccination of adolescents reached 68% postponements during the pandemic. In any case, the perception of vaccines remains positive: 8 out of 10 Italians agree that vaccinations save lives, represent a priority for safeguarding health in all stages of life and are important because they allow to protect even those who cannot get vaccinated. This, despite the large number of fake news that have them as their subject: at least 42% of Italians said they had come across a fake news about vaccines.

The importance of research

The experience of the pandemic has further strengthened the role and confidence in science. Not only that: the survey also shows that 8 out of 10 Italians recognize the importance of the R&D effort of the pharmaceutical industry in the fight against Covid-19 and believe that it can represent a driving force for the recovery of the Italian economy at the time. post Covid.

This is also why they are in favor of greater investments in public pharmaceutical assistance. The debate also revealed the urgency of a review of the governance of the pharmaceutical sector, through a reshaping of the current spending ceilings, a refinancing of the overall allocation of resources and the further improvement of an instrument – the Fund for Innovative Medicines. – which in the last four years has demonstrated its value also through an increase in the Fund and the possibility that innovative drugs remain within the Fund even after the three years currently allowed by the law.

Enhance the resources of the NRP

During the Inventing for Life Health Summit, the need to take advantage of the unrepeatable opportunity to restart, represented by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, which has allocated over 20 billion to the health mission, also clearly emerged. An important first step will be to overcome the “silo” vision in the financing of health expenditure, in favor of a more holistic and integrated vision. According to experts, a regulatory framework is needed that acts as a stimulus and not as a brake and the streamlining of bureaucratic complexities.
