Italians: “Environmental protection before employment growth”

by admin

Will it be a renewed environmental sensitivity due to the pandemic or the long tail of Greta’s battles? Whatever the explanation, protecting the environment is such an urgent need that 54% of Italians prioritize, in terms of importance, the improvement of environmental conditions to the growth of employment. This is what emerges from a survey commissioned by Bluenergy Group to Swg, in view of the Earth Day of 22 April 2021. The opinion of the majority of Italians is even more significant in this time of economic crisis.

A growing awareness

The research – conducted in March 2021 and with the CAWI method within a sample of 1,500 adults residing in Italy – highlighted a growing awareness and commitment on the issue of environmental protection, but only involves a minority of citizens: the 20% of respondents think that people are truly committed to protecting the environment and nature (14% in 2020), while it is interesting to note that the figure rises to 33% in the cluster of 35-44 year olds. The perception of the respondents regarding the greater commitment of people towards environmental protection in everyday behavior, if compared to 10 years ago, has increased: 77% of those involved think so, with a peak of 84% among graduates. Furthermore, 81% think that the single individual is able to contribute to the protection of the environment through daily actions.

Fears of global warming

Concern for global warming is strong, as indicated by 86% of respondents (up by 6 percentage points from 2018) and from 96% of the students. This is a concern not considered to be exaggerated: for 3 out of 4 Italians there is no alarmism on these issues. It is important to underline that this attention is greater on the part of those who will probably have to manage the consequences of these problems in the future: the share of those who think there is no alarmism (76%) is particularly high among students (87%). While the percentage of those convinced that alarmism is exaggerated (24%) is more pronounced among those between the ages of 35 and 44 (35%).

Protecting the environment is a priority

Protecting the environment is such an urgent need that 54% put the improvement of environmental conditions ahead of employment growth in terms of importance. Safeguarding the environment is a necessity especially for young people (76% between 18 and 24 years old) and the elderly (69% among those over 64). The emotional aspect is also an important element for those interested in this issue, those who practice sustainability on a daily basis, in fact, encounter positive sensations: these habits cause personal satisfaction to more than half of citizens (56%), followed by trust ( 28%) and pride (28%).

Reduction of emissions

Who works hardest? For almost 3 out of four Italians, science and environmental associations they are at the forefront of making a real contribution to reducing emissions, developing renewable energies and making the economy greener. 41% in this regard recognize the commitment of electricity, gas and water suppliers. On the contrary, the contribution made by the government and the public administration is considered low (indicated only by 29%) even compared to that of individual citizens (35%).
