Kidney transplanted on pancreas saves a child in Turin – Medicine

by admin

Hospitalized for end-stage renal failure at two months of life, a 4-year-old boy was saved from a kidney transplant connected to the pancreas, a technique never used on such a small patient already with a liver transplant. The intervention is the first in the world at a pediatric level according to the health workers of the City of Health of Turin who performed it. The new kidney, attached to the spleen vein inside the pancreas towards the liver, produced urine already in the operating room, without suffering from the liver transplanted 3 years earlier. After only 2 days, and 4 years always in the hospital, the baby is now feeding and playing.
