Kiss me again, desire for tenderness after a year of Covid

by admin

With the mask acting as a barrier for more than a year now, everyone misses kisses and hugs, as are smiles. More than three quarters of Italians suffered from the lack of affection more than having to stay indoors without being able to go out. This is confirmed by a survey conducted for Tau-Marin by the AstraRicerche Institute which revealed how much we all lack physical contact with partners, but also with friends and relatives.

The ‘Kiss Me Again’ investigation

The research, conducted last February through online interviews on a sample of 1,032 individuals aged between 15 and 65, revealed the nostalgic re-evaluation of gestures once taken for granted which, starting from the simplest kiss we are allowed to do. Hence the need to make up for their lack with new gestures such as that of ‘smiling’ more with your eyes or touching your elbows. 47% of respondents (which becomes 55% among women aged 45-54) admit that they lacked the opportunity to hug or kiss someone. On the podium of the most missed gestures of affection are hugs (28.8%), smiles (19.5%), kisses for friendship (12.3%) and passionate love ones (11.4%) ) which are especially lacking in young people.

The lesson of the pandemic

For those wishing to see the glass half full, it could be said that since we wear the mask and the health emergency has forced us to stay away from our loved ones, we have re-evaluated the affections. And, in fact, from the AstraRicerche survey it emerges that 72.7% have reflected on the value and importance of gestures of affection that were previously given less importance while 62.2% say they have developed and appreciated a series gestures capable of expressing intimacy and closeness while respecting the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. Furthermore, 56.3% declared to have intensified the affectionate gestures towards the cohabitants with whom it is possible to perform them.

Who will be the first to kiss

Starting from the relationship with the gestures of affection detected through the survey, AstraRicerche has identified five profiles of Italians. 27.6% do not know how to be without gestures of affection, 21.9% would like a smile while 21.2% would give anything for a kiss of love. Finally, 18% are satisfied with a smile and 11.2% more than gestures would like a social life. When asked ‘who will you kiss first when you get back to normal’, 45.4% answered relatives (parents, siblings, children, etc.), 34.8% their partner and 19.8% friends.

The therapeutic power of the kiss

In addition to being a way to express love and affection, kissing can also play a beneficial role for the body and mind. 85% of women (77% of men) know that some research suggests that a kiss can release muscle tension and stress, and has the same relaxing effect as yoga and meditation. 70% (versus 64% of men) know that kissing can lower blood pressure and improve heart regularity. 80% of women also know that kissing is challenging because 34 facial muscles and 112 postural muscles are involved.

For an Oscar kiss

What do you need for an unforgettable kiss? Italians have no doubts: the majority (65.9%) indicate in a fresh and clean mouth the prerequisite for an ‘Oscar’ kiss, especially if they are women (73%) and adults: 70% between 45-54 years old and 74% between the ages of 55-65. The research also investigated how to get a fresh and clean mouth: 68.4% of respondents said that if they were to kiss the partner of their life soon, they would immediately run to brush their teeth. Also in this case, the responses of women and over-54s prevail (74%). The freshness of the mouth and breath are so important that many interviewees confessed to us that they sometimes thought that it was not the right time to kiss because it is not okay with oral hygiene, especially in the morning when you wake up (40,7 %) and after eating certain foods, such as garlic and onions (39.4%).

Rules of oral hygiene

Surely in these months of pandemic that has forced many to smart-working and students to distance learning, it has given us the opportunity to brush our teeth more often, even after the lunch break that was previously done outside the home. But the pandemic has also seen a general reduction in dental visits and access to treatment. This is why good oral hygiene is essential. To brush your teeth, is it better to use a manual toothbrush or an electric one? “The manual one is better because it allows the pressure and speed of brushing to be modulated in full compliance with individual needs. In addition, it allows full control of the movement by optimally alternating the removal of residues and gingival massage – he explains. It is a new technology based on silver ions that inhibits the growth of different bacteria up to 99.9% on the handle and head of the toothbrush that is handled several times a day, thus ensuring greater safety.
