Lamborghini: tomorrow the flying car, today the track car that goes on the road

by admin

VALLELUNGA – “Small distances to be covered with self-driving, compact and light aircraft. To carry a passenger plus luggage ”: Stephan Winkelmann, president and CEO of Lamborghini, unveils what his brand’s flying car will look like. “Lamborghini – explains the number one of the Bolognese house – has always been synonymous with innovation across the board, a brand that has always amazed the world. We will also be innovative in this futuristic technology ”.

On the track with the Lamborghini Huracan STO

On the other hand, in the Sixties, with the Miura, Lamborghini presented a car that, for its innovative power, was more or less like the flying car of today. Without forgetting the Countach of the seventies. “Super technology – continues Winkelmann – is part of our DNA. And in the flying car challenge we will be facilitated because we always turn to a market niche where price is never a problem: according to our vision, this futuristic aircraft will be the link between trains and planes and the achievement of final goal “. The present, meanwhile, is made up of a technology applied to the car that no one on planet Earth handles with such ease. Yes, “casual” because in Sant’Agata Bolognese they use at the same time their mastery to make aspirated V12s and to play on TikTok, to create unique supercars and to develop apps for their customers.

Lamborghini telemetry: everything in the “Unica” App

We have just had a demonstration of this world of their own by driving the new Homologated Huracan SuperTrofeo in Vallelunga. In practice, as the name implies, a racing car with a license plate, ready to hit the track in LeMans or sail by skimming the gas towards Portofino or Ravello. Dedicated box, dedicated team, mechanics and testers all for us: in Covid time everything is customized, even a test drive. So after yet another buffer, off to the track, in Vallelunga. Under the watchful eye of telemetry, the electronic system that records all the car’s dynamic data in real time.

Let’s go back to the concept of “casual” use of technology: to understand how the Homologated Huracan SuperTrofeo was born, suffice it to say that on a secret track (but a reference one, they explain to Lamborghini) this car runs only two seconds slower than the racing Huracan that won the 24 Hours of Daytona on slick racing tires. The SuperTrofeo, on the other hand, had road tires. In short, we are in front of a real race car that in the wet, without traction controls, no electronic aids, remained glued to the slimy asphalt in Vallelunga, managing 640 horsepower as if nothing had happened. Thanks to the skill of the test drivers, engineers and technicians of Sant’Agata Bolognese who made the car, certainly not ours when we were behind the wheel. In short, a demonstration of that ancient craft of “knowing how to make cars” today mystified by electronic controls. But everything “riding” the STO seems easy. Yet the numbers speak of an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.0 seconds, from 0 to 200 km / h in 9.0 seconds and a top speed of 310 km / h.

Let’s go back to the pits and here we touch the other Hi-tech Lamborghini aspect: a totally connected telemetry system that allows us – for us as for all customers – to monitor and record their performance and analyze the data through the app. UNICA Lamborghini. Lap times, videos, engine revolutions, gear changes, braking: all just a click away, on an App developed by Lamborghini that allows you to store an infinite number of data on the cloud. To study, share with friends, analyze in detail to improve your driving skills. How strong did you go? Where did you go wrong? Where do you have to change the way you drive? Here are all the answers. With the finesse of having a double camera car, one that frames the driver behind the wheel (a bit of hedonism is a must when a brand like Lamborghini is at stake) and one that “sees” the track.

In short, in Sant’Agata Bolognese they know how to make you touch their technology. And it’s not just the App that underlines the speech: the exterior design of the Huracán STO responds to the same objective. the unmistakable Lamborghini profile has been reinterpreted to optimize airflow. In fact, on the track we met Mitja Borkert, Head of Design Lamborghini: “Racing cars – he explained to us while stroking our car as soon as I got back to the pits – are always a source of inspiration for our design. The Huracán STO elegantly reflects the technology transfer of the racing Huracán range, as can be seen in every aesthetic detail ”.

In reality, behind the shape and style of this Huracán STO there is a strange aerodynamic technology. Let’s try to explain it. Everything starts from the “Cofango”, a single piece that includes the front hood, the mudguards and the front bumper. It is inspired by the Lamborghini Miura and the more recent Sesto Element and has these advantages: it is very light, it allows quick access to the mechanics and its air intakes increase the flow of air through the central radiator to improve engine cooling and help generate downforce. And there’s more: a glance is enough to understand: on the tail there is a gigantic aerodynamic fin integrated into the rear hood. And it is not a stylistic quirk: it improves the dynamic capabilities of the STO, especially when cornering: in these conditions, the incoming airflow has an angle of attack and the different levels of pressure generated on both sides of the fin have a positive effect on the yaw stability. The fin also helps to straighten the airflow on the aileron, increasing its efficiency when cornering.

The same thing – we are referring to the glance – for the colossal rear wing that adjusts at will to optimize the aerodynamic balance and the drag according to the conditions of the route.

Now that we understand how this Lamborghini is made and why it is made like this, we can go and hear Maurizio Reggiani, Chief Technical Officer, of the Bologna-based company: “The Huracán STO – he explained – is a kind of concentrate of what we know how to do. , both from an aerodynamic and engine point of view. Without forgetting the new digital frontier that our customers appreciate more and more. “Reggiani does not know this, but unwittingly has created the most expensive App on the planet: to download it – first – you have to pay 300,000 euros to buy a Huracan STO.

offers all the thrills of a perfectly balanced, light and aerodynamically superior super sports car, reproducing the driving sensation and fun of the Super Trofeo, and is perfectly configured for the most demanding circuits in the world, but built for the road. The vast technical solutions and knowledge acquired from our Super Trofeo and GT3 programs have been refined and integrated into the Huracán STO to allow the driver to experience the emotions of a driver every day, aboard a Lamborghini super sports car approved for road use. capable of breaking any track record “.
