Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that can be found in various foods, of animal and vegetable origin. A privileged source of tryptophan are mushrooms, whose season comes to life in October. Taking tryptophan through food is essential, since our body is unable to synthesize it on its own. The importance of this amino acid is that it actively participates in protein synthesis and, above all, it is a precursor of serotonin. This neurotransmitter, synthesized by our brain, plays several roles, all of which are very important. Among them, the two main ones involve blood vessel narrowing and mood control. For this, tryptophan is attributed the ability to actively act on our central system. It would help combat anxiety and insomnia, as well as nervousness. It is also used to treat sleep apnea and relieve menstrual pain, to quit smoking and to improve sports performance.

It is good not to overdo it

It is not the presence of tryptophan that legitimizes a mushroom binge. This amino acid, in fact, could have some contraindications. For example, it can counteract the action of some antidepressant drugs, such as so-called MAO inhibitors. It could also amplify the sleepiness effect of sedative medications. In addition, stomach pains, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and kidney problems are associated with excessive tryptophan intake. EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) warns of insufficient scientific evidence supporting the benefits of tryptophan. For this reason, the advice is to consume mushrooms when it is in season, but not to abuse them. We also remember to always rely on certified products. Collecting mushrooms and eating them, even if you are not an expert, can lead to severe food poisoning.
