In jargon they call it Junk Food. The literal translation is junk food, but if we think it refers only to burgers and fries we are wrong. Junk food is what, if eaten regularly, increases mortality from all types of causes. But recent studies published in the British Medical Journal and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition say junk food predominantly causes cardiovascular disease.
These killer foods are all those that are ultra-processed before ending up on our tables. In other words: those that undergo different physical and chemical processes in order to be ready for consumption.
According to recent classifications, there are four categories of food. The first is that of the unprocessed, that is, those who do not undergo any manipulation (vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, fish). Then we have the culinary ingredients (salt, pepper, honey, sugar) and the processed ones (canned vegetables and legumes, canned fish, cold cuts). Finally, there are the ultra-transformers. These are those foods with added additives and preservatives. Among these we have: fruit juices, chips, energy drinks, snacks and much more. In short, we are talking about all those complex foods, but ready to be eaten. Supermarkets are full of them nowadays, because people demand food that doesn’t steal time and because it’s convenient for the market.
A study lays bare the harmful effects
A new Italian study, called the Moli-Sani study, has highlighted the disastrous effects of ultra-processed foods. The research tracked 22,000 people, ages 35 and up. The researchers monitored the eating habits of these subjects for 8 years, arriving at a conclusion that leaves no doubt. Those who often ate ultra-processed foods had severe cardiovascular problems and an associated mortality risk of 58%. If consumption was reduced to one in six meals, the risk dropped to 26%.
