Longevity: These are the three factors you can change in your life if you want to live more than 75 years

Recent research has identified the three key factors that can affect the quality of our life and, consequently, longevity, aging and the risk of developing dementia.

One study sought to identify “modifiable” factors associated with longevityamong adults aged 75 and over.

Researchers followed 1,810 adults aged 75 and over who participated in the Kungsholmen project over the course of 18 years.

The project Kungsholmen is a population-based longitudinal study on aging and dementia, conducted by the Stockholm Gerontology Research Center in collaboration with the Research Center on Aging (ARC), Karolinska Institutet.

During the study, 1,661 participants died. Half of the participants lived over 90 years. Half of smokers died a year earlier than non-smokers. Several modifiable factors emerged from the research.

L’physical activity it improved the quality of life. In fact, the average age at death of participants who swam, walked, or exercised regularly was two years higher than those who did not.

Furthermore, the median survival of people with a low risk profile, i.e. those who had a healthy lifestyle, participated in at least one leisure activity and had a social network, was 5.4 years longer than those with high risk profile.

Even among older adults (85 years or older) and people with chronic conditions, the mean age at death was four years higher for those with a low risk profile than for those with a high risk profile.

The researchers concluded:

Even after age 75, lifestyle-related behaviors, such as not smoking and exercising, are associated with increased longevity.

Therefore, from the results it was possible to highlight that there are three modifiable factors and lifestyle-related, which can affect longevity:

  • engage in physical activity
  • have a network of social relationships
  • participate in at least one free time activity.

Added to this is also thehealthy and balanced dietwhich means eating at least five servings of fruit and vegetables every day, opting for whole foods, preferring extra virgin olive oil and drinking the right amount of water.
