The Risks of Low-Carb Diets: Increased Cholesterol and Cardiovascular Events

A recent meta-analysis of 41 randomized controlled studies found that individuals who followed a low-carb diet experienced an increase in plasma LDL cholesterol levels, commonly referred to as “bad cholesterol”. This rise in LDL cholesterol was observed alongside a decrease in BMI values, highlighting the potential impact of low-carb diets on lipid profiles.

Furthermore, a report presented at the American College of Cardiology conference revealed that individuals following a ketogenic-style diet, which is low in carbohydrates and high in fats, were at a higher risk of experiencing cardiovascular events. The study found that those on a keto diet had more than doubled the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease events compared to those on a standard diet.

These findings suggest that while low-carb diets may be effective for weight loss in the short term, they may have detrimental effects on cholesterol levels and cardiovascular health in the long run. It is important for individuals considering a low-carb diet to weigh the potential benefits against the possible risks and consult with a healthcare provider before making any significant dietary changes.
