Marche, volunteering asks for concrete commitments for cancer patients

by admin

La Marcangola, the forum of voluntary associations operating in the Marche region oncology, subscribes to the appeal promoted by the European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC) and addressed to the European institutions to become aware of the need to support cancer patients today, during the pandemic, and in the future. “La Marcangola, with over 40 associations that take care of cancer patients in the Marche region, joins its voice to the call of the European Cancer Patient Coalition on ‘Cancer and COVID-19’ to promote concrete actions in favor of these patients, who are among the most fragile – says Rossana Berardi, Director of the Oncology Clinic of the Ospedali Riuniti of Ancona, Full Professor of Oncology at the Polytechnic University of Marche, founder and coordinator of the Marcangola network -. There are three points that, united, we ask the institutions of all of Europe. First of all, ensure that patients can have safe and timely access to diagnosis and treatment. Secondly, to identify the impact of the pandemic on services for cancer patients, trying to solve the critical issues. Finally, guaranteeing all services for cancer patients in the future ”. Covid-19 has clearly demonstrated the enormous limits of the health model which, in the pandemic era, saw the precious support of the territory and voluntary associations reduced, with all the consequent criticalities.

“In this period, the Covid-19 pandemic has upset the healthcare of every Western country and the activities of the third sector that support Italian healthcare, essentially stopping their raison d’etre as they can no longer carry out their mission – explains Renato Bisonni, Oncology Director of the Fermo Hospital and co-coordinator of Marcangola -. La Marcangola, the forum of voluntary associations of the Marches that deal with cancer patients, had the merit of keeping the ranks tight by continuing to contact and compare the different realities. None of these felt isolated, the planning work continued and today they are ready to return to the field, even more centered on the patient and his needs “. The voluntary associations active in the Marche have diversified activities. Some deal with oncological home care often operating under an agreement with the territorial reference hospital, others carry out front office activities in the oncological structures of the territory, still others provide support to patients and their families. Thanks to their activities, it is possible to respond to cancer patients, completing what is already offered by the health system.
