Measles Italy, symptoms and vaccines: when it can be done. Cases of whooping cough are also increasing: here’s why

Measles cases are exploding: increased 60-fold within a year in the WHO European Region (which also includes Central Asia). Why has this disease reared its head when it could be prevented with vaccination? Vaccination coverage in Italy is low and this contributes to triggering the surge in infections. According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), in the European Union alone, in a month, between March 2023 and February 2024, 5,770 cases of measles and at least 5 deaths due to the infectious disease were recorded. It goes hand in hand with this a 10-fold increase in whooping cough cases compared to the previous two years. If we broaden our gaze to the entire WHO European region, which in addition to Europe includes Central Asian countries, however, the increase in measles cases is almost 60 times in a year: from 941 cases in 2022 to over 50 thousand in 2023.
