Medici no vax, the dean of Medicine: “Health care workers have been demoted without the vaccine”

by admin

Ancona, 4 July 2021 – Professor Mauro Silvestrini is the new dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Polytechnic University of Marche. This was decided by the internal vote of the faculty with Silvestrini who obtained 90% of the votes. A proforma in practice, given that the head of the neurological clinic of the Torrette hospital was the only candidate after the retirement of Andrea Ciavattini, head of the Salesi department. The university has chosen continuity in terms of the operational line to be followed. Silvestrini, in fact, was the deputy of the former dean of the faculty, Marcello D’Errico, with whom he shared the path of recent years, including the very hard period of the pandemic. The same thing, that is a link between old and new leaderships, was also chosen at the time for the succession in the Rectorate: from Sauro Longhi to his deputy, Gian Luca Gregori. Officially Silvestrini will begin his three-year assignment on November 1st, in reality the teacher and appreciated doctor is already in possession of the full duties. With him we have addressed various issues, linked in particular to the pandemic of course, from no-vax healthcare to the operational future of the largest hospital.

The latest Covid bulletin of the Marche

Professor Silvestrini, is it normal that the election of the new headmaster was reached with only one candidate?
“I would say yes, in the end there was a gradual convergence on my name”.

But there was another competitor, Professor Andrea Ciavattini: what happened then?
“Ciavattini, a much appreciated colleague of great common sense, has decided to take a step back to keep the faculty together and avoid a split. He has guaranteed his support for my candidacy, in short, all is well”.

What situation does he inherit at the head of the faculty, but above all within the regional hospital of Torrette, including the deans Lancisi and Salesi?
“A picture distorted by the pandemic, the virus has affected everything, including the hospital’s mission, which has now been transformed into two parts. Now the situation is calmer, but the danger has not passed”.

How has the management worked in the last 18 months in your opinion?
“I would say very well, he was able to manage things by facilitating the path towards normalization. The relationship with the faculty is excellent”.

The resumption of healthcare activity, however, beyond Covid, seems very slow. Election interventions, diagnostics, specialist visits and so on, booking is again very difficult in Torrette, why?
“This time it is not going and it will not go like last year, when the pandemic emergency surprised everyone and it was not easy to organize the system. Now, the Coronavirus emergency is practically over (3 Covid patients remain in Torrette, ed.) We are good point. We have not neglected the other pathologies, guaranteeing care and attention above all to chronic ones. The taking in charge of the most fragile patients has been guaranteed. Coming specifically to your question, in the last month elections and hospitalizations have been released are guaranteed “.

Speaking of viruses, what do you think of your healthcare colleagues who are still stubbornly opposed to the anti-Covid vaccination?
“My position on the matter is very clear. Health workers who do not get vaccinated must be demoted, at the cost of being rigid. I think it is absurd not to get vaccinated for personal opinions”.

What numbers are we talking about?
“I don’t know them in detail, but fortunately there are a few dozen ‘rebel’ doctors, including, it should be pointed out, there are also subjects who really cannot get vaccinated for different reasons. I understand that doctors’ no-vax ‘there are none, or at least they can be counted on the fingers of one hand “.

Does demoting staff mean fewer forces in the departments, especially with the exodus of nurses due to the competition?
“There are some problems, but I can assure you that the situation is not as dramatic as it seems from the outside.”

The emergency room is under pressure: what do you plan to do?
“We need to improve collaboration with other hospitals and avoid everyone coming here. Fortunately, it seems that collaboration with general practitioners to filter is already giving good results. Torrette’s emergency room takes care of the most serious cases, minor traumas do not come. here”.
