From this night Tik Tok has a new king. His name is Khaby Lame and with 142 million and 400 thousand followers he has overtaken Charli D’Amelio. This is interesting for a lot of reasons. The first is that Khaby Lame invented a genre: in his videos he never said a word, they are short, funny sketches, all played on the mimicry of the face and hands that often make a gesture, which has become iconic, as if to say “you view?”.

The second is that the social character Khaby Lame is a child of the pandemic, of the fact that with the first lockdown the factory on the outskirts of Turin where he worked fired him and he started making videos. But the third reason is no less important. For everyone Khaby Lame is “the Italian tiktoker”: since he arrived in Italy from Senegal when he was one year old (he is now 22 years old); since he did all his studies here (he was not a great student); since he did a thousand jobs here before becoming a creator. Yet he does not have citizenship. We talked about it a year ago when we met him; at the time he had 100 million followers and had already become a global celebrity.
