Molecular or rapid? How to choose the right tampon |

Swab molecular or rapid? Which one to choose and when to do it? PCR testing, what we call molecular, is considered by many to be the best way to detect coronavirus infection. However, new scientific evidence requires some clarification. They’re called PRC, which stands for reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, and they can detect small amounts of the coronavirus genetic material in a sample collected from a person. The test works by amplifying or making copies of the genetic material if present in a person’s sample.

Molecular or rapid: the characteristics of the molecular

The test’s amplification property allows it to detect very small amounts of coronavirus in a sample. In this way the molecular is highly sensitive for the diagnosis of COVID-19. This sensitivity may be beneficial for detecting coronavirus after recent exposure, but the results can be positive even when you are no longer contagious. The molecular test is so sensitive that it could test positive even three or four weeks after you are no longer contagious. In fact, it collects small fragments of the virus that can persist in our body for a long time. Leana Wean, professor of health policy and management at George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, argues that PCR testing is not an appropriate test 7-10 days after the onset of symptoms.

Molecular crucial to find out if you are positive

The best time to do a PCR test is when you have had exposure to a positive person, or when you are experiencing symptoms and want to find out if you have a coronavirus infection.
Knowing your positivity as early as possible during an infection can make all the difference. All contacts can be notified promptly and treatment can begin immediately. Starting home care significantly lowers the risk of experiencing severe symptoms of the disease. The molecular test is able to identify positivity even before the onset of symptoms.

Molecular or rapid: the characteristics of the antigen test

So at this point we can say that a rapid antigen test is the best choice after having had Covid-19 for several days to check if you are still positive. Although the rapid antigen test has lower sensitivity than molecular, it remains reliable when virus levels are high and you are likely still infectious. This even if it must be remembered that we do not know exactly what the amount of virus is necessary to be contagious.

When does one remain contagious?

One British study published in December 2021 found that after five days of coronavirus infection, 31% of people were still infected. On the eighth day, that percentage dropped to 11% and continued to decline over the next few days. The best would be to do two quick tests for more confidence.

Molecular or rapid: when to do them?

So if we want to be more sure we are positive the best thing is to do a molecular PRC swab from the third day after contact with a positive or from the onset of symptoms. For the unsanitary it is better to wait from the fourth.
