Two new cases of monkeypox have been reported in Switzerland, the Federal Office of Public Health said. The total from 21 May thus rises to eight, half of which emerged between Thursday and Friday. After Zurich, Bern and Geneva, the canton of Basel-Stadt has also been touched for the first time.

The FOPH continues to believe that there is no danger to the general population: both national and international epidemiological data show that outbreaks are limited, even if new infections are to be expected.

A cousin of smallpox, a disease that has been globally defeated for about forty years, that of monkeys manifests itself in a similar way, with a severe fever followed by a rash with scabs. However, it is less dangerous. It can be transmitted from both animals and humans.
