Motorola introduces the moto g50 and moto g100 smartphones

by admin

Motorola today unveiled two new members of the moto g smartphone family in a virtual event. The new moto g100 has the role of seed of the range, while the moto g50 is positioned perfectly in the middle in price and specifications between the flagship and the two basic models, that is the moto g10 and moto g30 introduced just over a month ago. Both are equipped with Qualcomm processors and are compatible with 5G networks. The moto g50, in particular, is Motorola’s first 5G smartphone with an initial list price of less than € 300.

“The moto g family of smartphones is the most successful line among our users,” explained Carlo Barlocco, Executive Director of Motorola Europe, in a virtual meeting with journalists. «With these two new smartphones we are also offering a complete range this year. Moto g100, in particular, is a special model with which we celebrate the tenth generation of the Moto G family ».

Moto g100

The moto g100 is the most powerful Moto G in the company’s mid-range family, a range born in 2013 when the Chicago-based brand (now controlled by Lenovo) was still owned by Google. It is an interesting device from several points of view, with good technical characteristics, but which in some respects does not shine compared to the competition of the same range.

On the smartphone Motorola has implemented the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset with Adreno 650 GPU and 5G modem. It is a high-end component that offers excellent performance and optimizes consumption for longer battery life. There are 8GB of RAM (latest generation LPDDR5) and 128GB of memory with UFS 3.1 technology, a detail not to be overlooked because it is synonymous with high data writing and reading speeds.

Without infamy and without praise, however, the 6.7 ”screen. First of all because it is an LCD: in this price range there are now several competitors with OLED or AMOLED screens, such as Xiaomi’s Mi 10T Pro, various Realme models, or top of the last year’s range such as The OnePlus 8T. The screen does its job, has a high 90Hz refresh rate, and is certainly of quality. However, when viewed in bright light conditions, outdoors, it does not hold up to comparison with some of the aforementioned models. However, there is an advantage of the LCD over OLED screens: it cannot be folded as easily and thus avoids the temptation to equip smartphones with displays with curved edges. Which precisely (and fortunately) on the moto g100 are not present: the screen is flat as we like it.

The design of the moto g100 takes up the lines of the most recent moto g family without too many creative licenses. It is an elegant and simple phone, with a slightly elongated shape dictated by the 21: 9 aspect ratio of the screen. Inside there is a 5000mAh battery (with TurboPower 20W fast charging): it is used to power the 5G modem without deteriorating the autonomy, but at the same time contributes to the 209g of overall weight of the device. They are not few and they are definitely felt in your pocket.

For the rest, the moto g100 has everything you need and can expect from a phone of this range. There is the hybrid dual SIM (you can choose to insert 2 SIMs or a SIM + a memory card), water repellent protection (but it is not IP68, so don’t immerse it in the bathtub), a single USB-C port and especially the now very rare headphone jack. The picture is completed by NFC for digital payments and compatibility with WiFi 6.

Moto g100, triple camera

On the back of the moto g100 we find what Motorola calls a triple camera. In reality, the photographic sector of the smartphone actually consists of two cameras (a 64MP wide-angle with four-in-one pixel-binning) and a 16MP ultra-wide angle. The third lens, which at first glance looks like a camera, is actually just a depth sensor that serves to enhance portrait mode shots.

Looking at the photos in this article, you will also have noticed what looks like a fourth camera. Well, in reality it is not. Behind the lens, designed to visually resemble other cameras, is a ToF sensor. It serves to improve autofocus and enables the “audio zoom” feature, a sort of intelligent directional microphone that focuses audio recording on the subject being zoomed in while recording a video.

The quality of the photos taken with the main 64MP sensor is good but not excellent, when compared with smartphones of the same range. However, the color management is very good and we like the Motorola implementation of the new Android 11 camera app interface. The images taken with the wide angle are also good quality. This sensor is what, if desired, justifies the definition of triple rear camera, as it “doubles” as a macro lens to frame and take pictures of very close subjects.

For this purpose Motorola has equipped the lens with an LED ring light, set around the optics: it turns on automatically when macro mode is activated and allows you to better illuminate the close-up subject.

Overall, the photographic equipment of the g100 is more than sufficient, but at the time of purchase consider the absence of a telephoto lens: here we do not believe that a very high zoom makes the difference in the overall equipment of a smartphone, but a contained telephoto lens, even as small as 2 or 2.5X, it can prove very useful for shooting quality portraits.

We weren’t particularly impressed with the quality of the videos. The main sensor can record 6K footage at 30fps, or it can shoot in 40K at 30 or 60fps. The resolution is very good (more than enough for the target and for the price range, we add) but the absence of an optical stabilization is noticeable, especially when passing the videos on a computer for editing. However, the presence of the Dual Capture mode (designed for influencers and “creators”) which allows you to shoot yourself with the front camera and film at the same time with the rear lens should be noted.

Ready for

On the moto g100 Motorola has also enabled Ready For technology which had already debuted on the Edge Plus model last year. Thanks to Ready For the user can connect the smartphone to a TV or monitor, connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and use a desktop version of Android with an interface reminiscent of Windows, effectively transforming the phone into a mini- Laptop.

In promoting this type of functionality, smartphone manufacturers, including Motorola, have so far focused on the professional potential of smartphones, with an emphasis on PC-phone convergence that has often proved fruitless and little used. In bringing “Ready For” to moto g100, the Lenovo brand wants to try to change perspective, shifting the focus on multimedia content and entertainment. When connecting the moto g100 to a screen, the “Android PC” mode is only one of several options, and not even the main one. In fact, a dashboard suggests the possibility of watching YouTube, or another compatible streaming service. Gamers, thanks to the speed of the HDMI connection, can also start their favorite games on the big screen, by connecting an Xbox or Playstation controller to the phone, thus transforming the smartphone into a kind of portable console.

The idea seems good to us. With “Ready For” you can, for example, make a second TV or monitor smart, or you can make video calls by placing the interlocutor on a larger screen. The potential is there, and the further good news is that Motorola has planned to include the USB-C – HDMI cable in the package, necessary to connect the smartphone to a TV and monitor. In this way the functionality is within the reach of all users who buy the smartphone, without having to buy an additional accessory. It is not easy to say whether this will be enough to make Ready For an important discriminant at the time of purchase, but in our opinion, functionality remains a valid element of product differentiation in a mid-range smartphone market increasingly crowded with excellent proposals.

Moto g50

Together with the moto g100, Motorola today also presented the moto g50, a low-mid-range smartphone with 5G connectivity. Shapes, design and dimensions are very similar to those of the g30, and even the characteristics do not differ particularly. In some respects, in reality, the moto g30 could be even more performing, but it lacks compatibility with new generation networks.

The technical characteristics are suitable for a device of this range. The chipset is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480, the RAM is 4GB and alongside 128GB of storage space in the model that Motorola has chosen to market in Italy. The rear camera of the moto g50 includes a 48MP main sensor (again with quad pixels), a 5MP macro and a 2MP depth sensor. Also worthy of note is the presence here of the jack socket (which enables the presence of an FM radio tuner), the NFC for digital payments and a 5000mAh super-battery that can last up to a couple of days with normal use of the phone.

As on the moto g100, even on the g50 the software is Android 11, with Motorola’s My UX customization. This remains for us one of the strengths of the Lenovo brand smartphones. In fact, the interface is the same as Google’s “stock”, while the features added by Motorola, which can be discovered through the dedicated app, are few, well thought-out and never intrusive. These also include programmable gestures that allow you to open the camera, open applications or activate other smartphone functions simply with a specific movement of the hand.

Availability and prices

Motorola moto g50 will be available for € 279.90 in the 4GB + 128GB Steel Gray version: it will arrive in Italy in April.
Moto g100 instead arrives at the end of March, in the 8GB + 128GB configuration. The official price is € 599.90 but curiously you will never find it in stores for this figure, because before even marketing it Motorola has decided to activate a discount of € 100 on the occasion of the tenth generation of the range. In short, the official price of the moto g100 is € 499.90 (perhaps you could simply communicate this figure directly). It can be purchased in Iridescent Sky or Iridescent Ocean colors. In April it will also be available in Slate Gray.
