New contact point / EvKB establishes a center for child and adolescent urology

Bielefeld-Bethel – The specialist knowledge from the Clinic for Urology and the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Surgery is bundled in the new center for child and adolescent urology in the Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel (EvKB). In this way, children can be treated in the best possible way from the day they are born beyond the age of 18.

“The urinary and genital tract is one of the most complex organ systems,” explains Prof. Dr. Jesco Pfitzenmaier, Chief Physician at the Clinic for Urology, which together with the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Surgery forms the new Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Urology at the EvKB. Pediatric and adolescent urology deals with malformations of the kidneys and urinary tract, as well as tumours, narrowing of the ureter, backflow of urine into the ureter (reflux), urethral malformations and undescended testicles, as well as inflammation of the renal pelvis, urinary tract infections or narrowing of the skin (phimosis). “We also clarify functional disorders such as wetting or neurological problems when emptying the bladder. Two urotherapists also provide advice in special consultation hours,” says Prof. Dr. Winfried Barthlen, Chief Physician of Pediatric Surgery. The department of pediatric radiology is an important partner of the center, because the imaging procedures are decisive for the diagnoses.

Diseases of the urinary tract are the most common of the congenital malformations. These can be detected by an early and targeted ultrasound examination and, if necessary, further examinations such as kidney function tests or X-ray examinations suitable for children can be carried out. In recent years, the number of affected infants, children and adolescents of all genders has increased. “There is a clear trend towards conservative, i.e. non-surgical therapeutic approaches,” explain the doctors, who see many advantages in setting up a centre: professional resources are better used, age- and development-appropriate treatment and experienced care for children and young people is guaranteed , future physicians are offered training and further education together and the transition, i.e. the transition from youth to adult medicine, works more easily. Prof. Dr. Jesco Pfitzenmaier: “That is particularly important in this field, because some childhood illnesses drag on into adulthood.”

In a weekly pediatric urology conference via video, all cases are presented in an interdisciplinary manner and joint decisions are made. Colleagues in private practice also have the opportunity to present their complex cases here. Registration is sufficient: [email protected]
