New health insurance benefit: Fluoride varnish against tooth decay for all children up to the age of 6

As of today, new statutory health insurance benefits for children.

From today, April 24th, 2024, statutory health insurance companies will pay for the application of fluoride varnish for children up to their sixth birthday. Fluoride hardens tooth enamel and thus protects against tooth decay. All children are now entitled to this benefit, regardless of their individual caries risk. That is new.

“Parents should take advantage of this service for their child from their dentist in addition to regular early detection examinations,” advises Dr. Romy Ermler, Chairwoman of the proDente eV initiative and Vice President of the Federal Dental Association (BZÄK). “Although the dental health of children and young people has improved greatly in recent years, caries in baby teeth is still a problem.”

Healthy milk teeth – healthy permanent teeth

Around half of six to seven year old children already have teeth with tooth decay. This can significantly affect further tooth development. Healthy milk teeth are not only placeholders for permanent teeth, but are also important for language development and a healthy diet. In addition, children with decayed milk teeth are more likely to have tooth decay in their permanent teeth.

Fluoride protects against tooth decay

As soon as the first baby tooth has erupted into the oral cavity, parents should take their child to a preventive appointment with their dentist. Statutory health insurance companies require six preventive dental examinations for children between the ages of six months and the age of six. In addition, from April 24, 2024, the application of fluoride varnish will be covered by health insurance for all children up to their sixth birthday, regardless of the risk of tooth decay. Fluoride promotes the storage of minerals from saliva in the tooth enamel and hardens it. They are therefore effective protection against tooth decay.
