Nocturnal enuresis: what it is and why it occurs

by admin

The term enuresi it literally means “urinating inside” and is an involuntary emission of urine. The nocturnal form is the most frequent and is characterized by the child’s inability to restrain himself during sleep.

It is not a disease, except in some cases, but a disorder. And therefore it is necessary to resolve it in a timely manner by talking to your pediatrician.

What is that

In general terms, we can speak of enuresis from 5 years of age. The number of children suffering from this problem is higher than you think: 10/20 children out of 100 at 5 years, 5/10 children out of 100 at 10, 3 out of 100 in adolescence. It should be remembered that nocturnal enuresis does not disappear with adolescence, so much so that it can also be present in some adults.

How to act

In any case, experts advise to act immediately to arrive at the diagnosis and therefore the cure of the disorder. The old remedies of the past, such as waking the baby at night or reducing the water intake during the day, should be put aside. This is a mistake that must absolutely be avoided. Indeed, the child suffering from nocturnal enuresis should drink one and a half liters of water per day. This should also happen during school hours.

Bedwetting is not the result of stress but arises on the basis of well-defined mechanisms. The disorder could then create feelings of guilt in the child, so the psychological problems that intervene are not the cause but often a consequence of the enuresis, differently from what was believed in the past.

Finally, these disorders lead to a sleep that can be fragmented and therefore also to a lower academic performance.
