On Nintendo Switch, everyone will be able to create a video game: that’s how it is done

by admin

For a long time now in the world of video games a sub-genre that we could define as “creative games” has been consolidated, titles with which to test the game design skills that provide all the tools to develop everything (or almost) what we have in mind.

They belong to this category Dreams for PlayStation or Roblox, which is a very powerful creation tool and monetization, and also Videogames laboratory, expected on June 11 on Nintendo Switch.

The original title is Game Builder Garage and is a sort of toolbox for anyone who wants to develop a video game, or learn how to do it with a series of step by step guides and tests that take advantage of some pre-installed titles: Nintendo had already done something similar with the two Super Mario Maker, but now you can create games of virtually any kind.

How do you make a video game
The artistic vision of Laboratorio di Videogiochi is based on the idea that every video game is made by small creatures that work in concert to give us a playful experience called nodons. What then are the controls, the switches, the rules dependence between the various parts, the sound, the objects that we will have to position within our project. Here, then, that the button to decide an action has a decisive face ready to jump or strike, the command with which to decide the point of view is a small camera with the ambition of a director and so on.

The heart of Videogames laboratory it consists of a library of objects, textures, actions and commands with which it will be possible to create a driving game, a shooter, platformer, puzzle game and much more. To each it will be possible to associate precise characteristics: if it can be destroyed, if its touch is fatal for the player, if it moves in space, if touching it other scenic or environmental effects are activated; if desired, it is also possible to activate a very simple artificial intelligence to compete against the computer in car races or other challenges.

Obviously it is not possible to replicate every variable of the video game world, but the system appears quite powerful and flexible to guarantee many possibilities, and if you want you can also create your own graphic assets directly within the laboratory to make everything even more personal.

The interface is a lot cheerful and cartoonish in full Nintendo style, designed for a young audience who wants to create and not just play, but it is also great for the older ones who want to try their hand at the rudiments of the trade.

The tutorials and the opinion of other gamers
In order not to get lost immediately among all the possible options, Nintendo has structured Video Game Workshop to guide the player with a series of tutorials based on some ready-made games that are broken up into a series of guides to show how each single component was created. ; each lesson is followed by a small quiz to immediately put into practice what has been learned. Of course, it’s also possible to try your hand at free mode right away where you start from scratch, but these tutorials will likely be essential for most players.

And once you have created your own game? It will be possible to use it alone or with friends, but above all share it online: if you have a Nintendo Online subscription you can upload it to a server, so that the author and the game will be assigned unique IDs that will allow other people to download and try it. It will also be possible whether or not to give others permission to modify the downloaded game, to stimulate their creativity. And maybe give life to the next blockbuster.
