(ANSA) – ROME, OCTOBER 14 – One in three children with food allergies has been bullied at least once in their life: in most cases it happens at school and two times out of three bullies ‘stop’ in psychological violence or verbal. But half of the allergy sufferers have suffered violent acts that can also have serious repercussions. These are the data published in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology by a group of researchers from Washington University. The same thing is happening in Italy. Allergologists of the Italian Society of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (Siaaic) from their national congress, underway in Bari, are sounding the alarm. “In recent years, in parallel with the increase in food allergies, the bullies have well thought of adapting to the times, addressing their violence also to children with allergic diseases, and not just food”, underlines Gianenrico Senna, president of Siaaic. The US survey involved 121 children aged 9-15 with a confirmed diagnosis of allergies to foods such as cow’s milk or eggs and more. The results show that the phenomenon is very widespread, with 33% of children and young people victims of at least one episode of bullying linked to their allergy: derided, excluded, attacked for their allergy especially by classmates (73% of cases) and at school (71%), while only 12% of their parents said they were aware of these situations.
