Microsoft said that in order to focus resources on new tools, operating systems, and provide users with the latest products, starting from January 1, 2022, Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 versions of the OneDrive desktop App will no longer be updated. The personal version of the OneDrive desktop App on these three platforms will no longer be able to synchronize data to the cloud from March 1, 2022.

Microsoft recommends that users of the above three versions upgrade their machines to Windows 10 or 11 to avoid interruption of operation. If the machine is too old to run the new Windows version, the only way is to use the Web version. Therefore, starting from March 1 next year, users on older Windows machines will have to manually upload files or data to the Web version of OneDrive to access, edit, and share data.

As for the OneDrive Enterprise Desktop App, from January 1 next year, support for the App will follow the Windows support life cycle. Among them, the extended support of Windows 7 and 8.1 will be until January 10, 2023, and the support of Windows 8 has been terminated on January 12, 2016, which means that even for business users, Windows 8 OneDrive will be released on December 12 this year. The update will stop on the 31st.
