OSTEOPOROSIS: WE TALK ABOUT BONE FRAGILITY IN A CONFERENCE AT THE CONA HOSPITAL

face the innovations in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis with a focus on osteoporosis secondary to endocrine pathologies. This is the main purpose of the Refresher course scheduled for Friday 9 June in the Aula Magna of the Cona hospitalstarting work at 8.00.

After greetings from Prof. Laura Ramaciotti, Rector of the University of Ferrara and of General Management of the University Hospital of Ferrarathey will speak experts in bone pathology of national and international importance, who will discuss different topics. Scientific managers of the event la Prof. Maria Chiara Zatelli (Director of the Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Operative Unit of the Cona hospital), the Prof. Maria Rosaria Ambrosio (Associate Professor in Endocrinology) and the Prof. Gloria Bonaccorsi (Director of the Research Center for the Study of Menopaua and Osteoporosis). We remind you that a second level clinic dedicated to phosphocalcic pathologies is active at the Cona hospital.

Osteoporosis is one systemic disease of the skeletal systemcharacterized by a low mineral density and by the deterioration of the micro-architecture of the bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and increased risk of fracture (in particular of the vertebrae, femur, wrist, humerus, ankle) for even minimal trauma. This pathology can be “primary”, affecting post-menopausal women or the elderly, and secondary, affecting subjects of any age suffering from chronic diseases or on therapy with drugs that directly or indirectly negatively affect skeletal health Osteoporosis strikes today over 30 million people in Europe, correct diagnosis and adequate treatment are essential to reduce the risk of fractures, mortality and the associated reduced quality of life.

In recent years, the diagnostic framework of osteoporosis has been enriched by new parameters detected with bone densitometry, which allow to evaluate aspects related to the microarchitecture and resistance of the bone, thus allowing a better characterization of the risk of fractures. Recently, among the examinations for the study of bone fragility, a new ultrasound technique has been introduced: the REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry) which, through an ultrasound scan of axial skeletal sites such as the spine and femur, provides a measurement of bone mineral density without the use of ionizing radiation. Furthermore, the therapeutic baggage has been enriched with new drugs. The cost-benefit evaluation has important implications not only on the state of health of patients, but also on the appropriate management of healthcare resources.

L’multidisciplinary approach and the creation of networks between the hospital and the territory they are fundamental for the correct management of this pathology, from the simplest to the most complex cases, and to facilitate the patient in his treatment path.
