Ovarian cancer, a personal trainer via app for patients

by admin

A physical activity program for women who have had ovarian cancer – from walking to running – customized and controlled by a dedicated personal trainer, with whom each participant is in contact via an app. It is the ā€œMovimento e Saluteā€ project conceived by Acto Onlus (Alliance against ovarian cancer) which is reaching the various Italian regions and which in recent days has also arrived in Puglia, to involve 19 patients from the region.

The project, born from an idea of ā€‹ā€‹Emanuela Bellet, patient and vice president of Acto onlus, has the main objective of strengthening the motivation and resilience of women affected by the disease and is reserved for groups of patients being treated at centers specialized in treatment of this neoplasm and connected to the regional affiliates of Acto. With the help of the oncologist, patients who can join are identified, based on individual physical conditions. “In this particular moment of restrictions and social distancing between people – comments Annamaria Leone, President of Acto Puglia – having the opportunity to feel part of a group, even if in a virtual way, and sharing their experiences with other women allows you to feel better physically and psychologically, and help others too. This is why I enthusiastically accepted the invitation to bring the program to our region, where it will be possible to walk by the sea or in our beautiful countryside ā€.

The program is promoted by Acto and Ardea events, with the patronage of the research groups MITO (Multiple Italian Trials in Ovarian Cancer) and MaNGO (Mario Negri Gynecological Oncology Group), and the app used was developed by U4Fit. The Apulian stage obtained the non-conditioning support of Clovis Oncology and was presented to the patients in a webinar which was also attended by the two personal trainers who will follow them. ā€œLifestyle, nutrition and physical activity are three key moments in our daily life. In particular, physical activity takes on an extraordinarily important role in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment or in the post-therapy rehabilitation phase “, concludes Gennaro Cormio, of the University and Polyclinic of Bari:” The possibility of carrying out physical activity under the guidance of an expert personal trainer combines the desire for a ‘normal’ life with sharing this path with other women, for the benefit of the quality of life “.
