This year was originally expected to be a physical E3 game show as usual, but that was before the Omicron variant swept the world and disrupted everything.
For this reason, ESA previously announced that E3 2022 will still be held in an all-digital form, with no physical events.
Unfortunately, if the very talkative editor and well-informed industry insider Jeff Grubb is to be believed, maybe even the digital show will be cancelled. In a short video, he briefly explained that it (the digital version of E3) was “supposedly” cancelled entirely. It remains to be seen whether that means June’s big video game event will no longer exist, but last year Geoff Keighley hosted a very successful livestream called Summer Game Fest, which is expected to return.
Individual publishers are likely to hold their own events, whether E3 exists or not, because in this period of a somewhat stagnant industry, it’s also a good thing to have an event that spews out a lot of video game news and announcements.
