Pos is mandatory in Italy. What are mobile Pos and how much do they cost

From today 30 June merchants and professionals can be sanctioned if they do not allow customers to pay with a debit (Bancomat), credit or prepaid card. Each refused Pos transaction could result in a penalty of 30 euros, plus 4% of the value of the transaction itself. At the moment, other digital payment tools such as applications and other mobile payment solutions are not taken into consideration. The obligation concerns the Pos. The new technologies applied to finance (fintech) have made sure that the Pos (English acronym for Point of sales, or point of sale), from fixed – that is connected via the Internet to become more agile and fast.

Today there are different types, with management costs that represent an advantage for merchants and ease of use for customers. Over the years, various traditional Pos solutions have arrived in Italy and authorized. Basically, these mobile POS transform a smartphone into a payment terminal by connecting to the device via bluetooth, both for iOS and Android operating systems. The POS reads the card and transfers the data to the smartphone which acts as a terminal to accept and process payments. It does not print receipts, but sends them via SMS if necessary.

SUMUP

Sumup is probably the most popular mobile Pos at the moment. The company, founded in 2012 and headquartered in London, has just obtained a final round of investment of 59 million euros which has brought its valuation to 8 billion. There are several mobile Pos available on the company’s website, different for the needs and use of the merchant, from 14 to 119 euros. Basically, there are no fixed costs or contractual obligations. The merchant expense is directly proportional to the number of times Sumup is used to process payments. Apart from the gabelle a tatum for the purchase of the device, there are no other monthly costs and Sumup takes 1.95% commission on all transactions performed. Credits are made to the current account in two working days.

POSTEPAY TANDEM

It is Poste Italiane’s Pos and mobile payments service. The price of the device is 79 euros and accepts all the cards of the main circuits even on the move. It has no fixed monthly costs and manages transactions via a Mobile Pos terminal and the Tandem App developed by the Italian Post Office which can be installed on both smartphones and tablets, iOS and Android. The commission applied to the transaction is 1.50%, among the cheapest available at the moment. The collections are credited, according to the Poste website, in one working day on the BancoPosta account, on the Postepay Business or on a third-party account, communicating the Iban of the company account.

AXERVE EASY

Axerve Easy is a solution for those who, instead of paying a fixed percentage of transactions, prefer a fixed monthly fee. The company is part of the Sella Group and is currently one of the major mobile payment hubs in Italy. Currently the offer includes either a monthly fee of 17 euros, or a monthly fee of 22. The first if you collect up to 10 thousand euros a year, the second up to 30 thousand euros a year. Over 30 thousand euros, a 1% commission is applied to all transactions over the threshold. The Pos is for hire, so it does not have to be paid for, and there is an activation stamp of 16 euros.

The service includes an online dashboard to manage all transactions carried out with the Pos and an assistance service that is always ready to respond to customer requests. ZETTLE

Zettle is the mobile Pos system of the PayPal family, the American giant founded by Elon Musk and Peter Thiel who in 1998 contributed to the financial technology revolution. For years it has been considered the main alternative to Sumup. Paypal bought the company and its technology in 2018, back then it was called iZettle. The main difference compared to other mobile Pos is the type of rate applied.

A regressive rate, which starts at 2.75% for each transaction to go down to a minimum of 1%. The downside is that to get to that rate, it takes several monthly transactions, on the order of several thousand euros. Mobiletransaction.org has calculated that to reach that percentage, transactions equal to about 6,000 euros per month are needed. Zettle is a Pos card reader that starts with an app, just like the other competitors, downloadable for both Android and iOS smartphones.

POS LINK

Nexi’s mobile Pos is another Italian solution, therefore available in Italy. Nexi is the largest Italian operator in the digital payments sector. On the site we read that the Pos can be purchased at a price of 15 euros excluding VAT. Transactions have a commission of 1.89% of the amount received for all payments with European cards Mastercard, VISA, Maestro, VPAY and PagoBANCOMAT. It is activated via the app, which has the function of receiving and recording payments. The crediting of the amounts, we read on the website, will arrive within the working day following the date of collection. There is no account opening constraint. All you need is a current account in Italy. Like other Poss, it also provides the Pay-by-link service, to accept payments by sending a link via SMS, email and social media to the customer even when he is not present in the store, often the preferred solution for orders placed online.
