Positive Year for the Museum of the History of Medicine and Health in Extremadura de Zafra: 3,000 Visitors in 2023

The Museum of the History of Medicine and Health of Extremadura de Zafra welcomed around 3,000 visitors in the year 2023. Maite Calderón, the museum’s director, has expressed satisfaction with last year’s attendance figures, which remained consistent with those of 2022, marking a continued recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Calderón explained that the museum was closed throughout the year for necessary improvement works, including the replacement of all windows, exterior and interior painting, cleaning, and general maintenance. Despite this, there was a notable increase in the number of foreign visitors. The director highlighted that even two groups of North American medical students visited the museum, specifically traveling to Zafra for this purpose.

The museum remains a key attraction for national tourism, as it is the only Museum of Medicine in Extremadura and one of four in Spain. Calderón expressed that visitors continue to be surprised and visit out of interest and curiosity.

In addition to individual visitors, 300 students from various schools and institutes visited the museum, a result of ongoing collaboration with educators.

The museum has also received numerous donations, including old books, documents, and medical materials, indicating growing support and interest.

Looking ahead to 2024, the museum plans to enhance its educational and informative offerings, further improve the museum’s facilities, and continue to engage with the local community through various events and activities. These plans include increased educational material for school visits, new temporary exhibitions, conferences, and dramatized visits. The museum will also be the setting for the filming of a documentary about the life of psychiatrist Sigmun Freud, as well as volunteer training workshops.
