It is estimated that in Italy over 2 out of 10 people have a severe or mild / moderate mental disorder. In particular, due to the pandemic, according to the Italian Society of NeuroPsicoFarmacologia, at least 150,000 new cases of depression are estimated due only to the loss of work generated by the current economic crisis. Women are especially at high risk: more predisposed to depression and more affected in the workplace by Covid-19.

“We have always paid particular attention to gender psychiatry to Pope John with the establishment, since 2012, of a dedicated clinic – explained Emi Bondi, director of the Mental Health Department of Asst Papa Giovanni XXIII -. Women have a significantly higher risk of getting depressed and anxious than men (about three times as much) and this particularly in childbearing age. In the last two years, among the effects of the pandemic, there has been an important increase in all mental disorders and in particular in depression and anxiety with heavy repercussions in terms of disability and suffering. It therefore appears important to be able to intervene from the beginning of the symptoms for a timely taking charge and treatment of the disorder especially in the populations considered most at risk “.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has led to an increase in mental disorders, in particular anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, panic and post-traumatic effects of stress,” says Francesca Merzagora, president of the Onda Foundation. «These disorders have a negative impact on the quality and quantity of life, affecting all areas: personal, affective-family, socio-relational and work. They often lead to isolation and loneliness. This is why it is important to intervene as soon as possible: asking for help is the first fundamental step to tackle the problem. Psychic disorders are treatable, not all of them are curable. And where healing is not achievable, effective interventions can be adopted that can reduce the intensity, duration of symptoms and consequences ».
